Engineering Technician Intern

Role Summary

The Engineering Technician Intern performs hands-on technical tasks in product development labs to support prototype electro-mechanical systems, test equipment, and IC device evaluation. The role works with engineers to assemble, test, characterize, troubleshoot and document experimental hardware and test setups.

Typically embedded in a product development or lab engineering team; tasks include fabrication, assembly, functional validation, electrical analysis, and maintaining laboratory processes and documentation.

Experience Level

Entry-level / Internship. Intended for currently enrolled students or early-career candidates; no specific years of professional experience required.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assemble, modify, and fabricate prototype electro-mechanical systems and experimental circuitry.
  • Set up, operate, and maintain bench and automated test equipment and diagnostic tools.
  • Perform operational testing, checkout, characterization, functional validation, and electrical analysis of prototypes and test systems.
  • Isolate faults, troubleshoot electrical/mechanical systems, and document findings.
  • Execute detailed experimental tests to collect design data and support engineering research.
  • Maintain lab processes, records, and documentation in accordance with quality standards (e.g., IATF 16949).

Requirements

Must-have and preferred qualifications extracted from the posting.

  • Must-have: Be 18 years of age or older; ability to perform hands-on lab and test work; strong attention to detail; basic troubleshooting skills on electrical/mechanical systems.
  • Nice-to-have / Preferred: Experience with soldering; experience with bench and automated test equipment; proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); ability to multitask and work with minimal supervision; strong verbal and written communication and teamwork skills; familiarity with lab documentation and quality processes.

Education Requirements

Required: High School diploma or GED. Currently enrolled in a technical certificate or associate degree program in Electrical/Electronic Technology, Electromechanical Technology, Instrumentation Technology, Automated Industrial Technology, Robotics and Controls Technology, Nanoengineering/Nanotechnology, Electron Microscopy, or a related electronics/technical field.
