Engineering Manager, Silicon Assembly (Starlink)
Role Summary
Manage a growing multidisciplinary manufacturing engineering team building in-house integrated circuit packaging and assembly for Starlink. Drive yield, manufacturability, throughput, cost, and reliability of silicon packaging lines through technical leadership, process development, and operational improvements.
This role partners with IC packaging, test, reliability, production, supply chain, and equipment vendors to introduce new products and scalable manufacturing processes.
Experience Level
Senior β requires demonstrated leadership experience. Typical background: 5+ years in semiconductor process engineering, manufacturing, or automation and 2+ years in a leadership or management role.
Responsibilities
Deliver technical and operational leadership for silicon packaging and assembly manufacturing.
- Lead and grow a 10β20 person multidisciplinary team across automation/controls, photolithography, thin/dry films, plating, etch, molding, singulation, die attach, BGA attach, and RF test.
- Define equipment needs and work with production, process engineering, supply chain, and vendors to deploy and qualify manufacturing systems.
- Establish data-driven controls (FMEA, SPC) and module-level Out of Control Action Plans (OCAP) to improve yield and stability.
- Perform regular yield and root-cause reviews; oversee corrective actions for non-conformance and drive quality metrics toward 3-sigma repeatability.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards (ISO, SEMI, JEDEC) and site safety protocols while driving continuous improvement.
- Recruit, mentor, and develop engineers; conduct performance reviews and build high-performance teams.
Requirements
Must-have technical experience, leadership, and operational readiness.
- 5+ years in semiconductor process engineering, manufacturing, or automation focused on packaging/back-end processes.
- 2+ years in a leadership or management role overseeing engineers or technical teams.
- Hands-on familiarity with packaging processes and equipment (photolithography, thin/dry films, plating, etch, molding, singulation, die attach, BGA, RF test) and with equipment qualification/validation.
- Experience implementing FMEA, SPC, root-cause analysis, and corrective action processes in high-volume or automated lines.
- Ability to work extended hours (overtime/weekends) as needed and travel up to ~10% for vendor engagement or factory acceptance testing.
- Physical requirements: standing for long periods, climbing ladders, bending, lifting up to 25 lbs unassisted.
- ITAR eligibility: U.S. citizen, U.S. lawful permanent resident (green card holder), refugee, asylee, or otherwise eligible for required Department of State authorizations.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with FPGA/ASIC or high-power component integration and new product introduction.
- Programming for automation (structured text, ladder logic, C++) and simulation/measurement tools (MATLAB, LabVIEW).
- Experience managing large budgets (> $10M) and implementing quality management systems (ISO9001, AS9100).
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline is required. Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in mechanical, electrical, chemical engineering or related field is preferred.
