Engineering Intern - AI Applied to Physical Implementation of Digital Integrated Circuits
NXP SemiconductorsJob Title
Engineering Intern - AI Applied to Physical Implementation of Digital Integrated Circuits
Role Summary
Six-month final-year internship within the Digital Physical Implementation team responsible for physical implementation of 16 nm SoCs. The role evaluates how AI and machine-learning techniques can improve design-flow efficiency, engineer productivity, and result quality for digital integrated-circuit implementation.
The intern will identify relevant use cases from team projects, implement evaluation experiments on real cases, and report assessed gains and recommended approaches.
Experience Level
Entry-level internship. Targeted at final-year engineering students (Master's-level); suitable for candidates with limited professional experience. Duration: 6 months, on-site in Valbonne (Sophia-Antipolis).
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include identifying and evaluating AI-driven improvements to the physical implementation flow and supporting experiments on real project data.
- Identify and prioritize AI/ML use cases for digital SoC implementation and verification.
- Design and run experiments to evaluate potential gains on real project data from the team.
- Develop prototype tools or workflows (e.g., AI-based design-assistance tools) to test concepts.
- Explore and apply generative-AI models to improve engineering productivity.
- Analyze and leverage data produced by EDA tools to derive actionable insights.
- Automate targeted implementation and verification tasks where feasible.
- Prototype intelligent assistants that integrate technical documentation and knowledge bases.
- Report findings, limitations, and recommendations to the team; define final project scope with supervisors.
Requirements
Must-have and preferred skills for successful performance during the internship.
- Must-have: Interest in AI technologies and complex digital systems; willingness to work on SoC physical implementation problems.
- Must-have: Good written and spoken English.
- Must-have: Availability for a six-month, on-site internship in Valbonne (Sophia-Antipolis).
- Preferred: Familiarity with EDA tool outputs, data analysis, machine learning concepts, or experience prototyping tools or scripts for engineering workflows.
Education Requirements
Currently completing the final year of an engineering programme (Master's-level) in microelectronics, integrated-circuit design, or a closely related field (e.g., IC design, microelectronics).
