Role Summary
Microchip is seeking a SERDES Characterization Engineer II to join the Electrical Characterization team in Burnaby, BC. The role validates and optimizes high-speed SERDES interfaces (up to 32Gbps NRZ / 128Gbps PAM4) across process, voltage, and temperature to ensure product readiness for datacenter, automotive, and space applications.
This position works closely with mixed-signal designers to build automated test platforms, develop lab hardware and firmware, and produce characterization reports that drive design improvements.
Experience Level
Mid-level β Engineer II. The posting indicates 1β2 years of related experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include characterizing, debugging, and documenting SERDES IP and hardware; building automation and test platforms; and collaborating with design teams.
- Design and run automated electrical characterization tests for SERDES interfaces across PVT corners.
- Analyze and debug complex SERDES failures; identify root causes and recommend design changes.
- Develop test firmware and script-based automation to accelerate characterization cycles.
- Design and prototype high-performance test PCBs and lab hardware for compliance and performance validation.
- Author characterization plans, measurement procedures, and technical reports that inform product decisions.
- Collaborate with mixed-signal designers on transmitter/receiver tuning, PLLs, CDRs, CTLE/AFE/FFE/DFE behavior.
Requirements
Key technical skills and experience required or strongly preferred.
- Must-have: 1β2 years of hands-on experience with high-speed analog circuits in a lab or test environment.
- Must-have: Practical use of lab instruments such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, BERTs, and VNAs.
- Must-have: Knowledge of semiconductor fundamentals, circuit theory, and high-speed signaling.
- Must-have: Experience with script-based test automation (Python or similar).
- Must-have: Strong analytical, problem-solving, and written/verbal communication skills.
- Nice-to-have: Experience with SERDES protocols (PCIe, CXL, OIF) or DSP techniques applied to high-speed links.
- Other: Willingness to travel up to ~25%.
