Engineer, Firmware Test (SSD)

Role Summary

The Engineer, Firmware Test supports SSD firmware verification and validation by developing tests, automating regression suites, investigating defects, and working with firmware engineers to improve code quality and product reliability. The role focuses on disciplined execution of test plans and effective cross-functional communication to support enterprise SSD product development.

Experience Level

Entry-level / Early career β€” 2–3 years of relevant test development and validation experience (internship or academic project experience counts).

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Develop comprehensive firmware verification plans and test cases for SSD firmware features.
  • Execute white-box, grey-box, and system-level testing; perform regression testing.
  • Analyze regression failures and perform structured root-cause analysis of firmware issues.
  • Participate in code reviews and provide feedback to improve firmware quality and coverage.
  • Collaborate with firmware engineers to improve code quality and product reliability.
  • Automate tests, maintain test frameworks, and document test activities and validation results.
  • Communicate technical challenges, solutions, and mitigation plans to cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Support continuous improvement of validation methodologies and build technical knowledge in SSD architecture and storage technologies.
  • Integrate AI-assisted tools and insights where appropriate, following organizational standards and exercising sound judgment.

Requirements

Must-have skills and experience:

  • Experience with software testing concepts: white-box, grey-box, black-box, boundary, and regression testing.
  • Proficiency in Python for scripting, debugging, and test framework development.
  • Experience in firmware verification, validation, and regression testing techniques.
  • Familiarity with Git development flow and branch management.
  • Root-cause analysis and software defect investigation skills.
  • Basic understanding of storage protocols and technologies.
  • Structured problem-solving, clear written and verbal communication, and ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Nice-to-have:

  • Knowledge of PCIe, NVMe, NVMe-MI, and OCP specifications.
  • Exposure to SSD products, storage systems, or firmware validation environments.

Education Requirements

B.Sc. or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience. Internship or academic project experience may satisfy experience expectations.
