Embedded Systems Engineer
Role Summary
Design and deliver battery-powered, low-SWAP embedded test instrumentation for military avionics from concept through production. Work on-site in San Antonio, TX with a multidisciplinary engineering team supporting USAF programs.
Primary responsibilities include hardware and firmware development on ARM-based platforms, FPGA integration, PCB design, and embedded Linux software for portable test equipment.
Experience Level
Senior β requires approximately 10 years of professional embedded systems design and development experience.
Responsibilities
Key duties include designing hardware, firmware, and test solutions for portable avionics test equipment and supporting system integration and verification.
- Design and develop battery-powered test instrumentation using ARM Cortex-A/M processors.
- Implement power-optimization and battery-management techniques to meet low SWAP targets.
- Perform circuit card design in Altium Designer (schematic capture through multi-layer PCB layout and fabrication).
- Develop and integrate FPGA designs for signal processing, control, and data acquisition.
- Perform circuit analysis, simulation, and verification; use oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and diagnostic tools for debugging.
- Develop embedded software/firmware for RedHat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) Edge and Ubuntu platforms.
- Integrate and troubleshoot serial communication protocols: I2C, USB, RS-232, RS-485, SPI.
- Collaborate with systems engineering on requirements, architectures, verification strategies, and design reviews.
- Support product lifecycle from concept to delivery within cost, scope, and schedule constraints.
- Interface with customers (USAF) on technical progress and requirements clarification.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, security and location requirements, followed by desirable skills.
- Must-have:
- ~10 years professional experience in embedded systems design and development.
- Proven ARM (Cortex-A or Cortex-M) hardware design and firmware development experience.
- Circuit card design experience in Altium Designer including multi-layer PCB design, signal integrity, and EMI/EMC considerations.
- Extensive FPGA programming experience (Xilinx, Intel/Altera, or Lattice) with VHDL or Verilog.
- Expertise in embedded system power optimization and battery management for portable equipment.
- Proficiency with I2C, USB, RS-232, RS-485, and SPI integration and troubleshooting.
- Embedded Linux development experience (RHEL Edge and/or Ubuntu).
- U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a DoD security clearance; minimum clearance to start: Secret.
- Willing and able to work on-site in San Antonio, TX; travel up to 10%.
- Nice-to-have:
- Experience with avionics, USAF programs, Automated Test Equipment (ATE) or Test Program Set (TPS) development.
- Familiarity with MIL-STD-1760, MIL-STD-1553, MIL-PRF-28800, MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-461.
- Real-time operating systems, edge computing, and product development to AS9100/ISO 9001 standards.
- Experience with Python, C/C++, scripting for test automation; RedHat certifications (RHCE or RHCSA).
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Embedded Systems, or a related engineering discipline is required. RedHat certifications (RHCE/RHCSA) were listed as desirable certifications.
