Job Title
Embedded Software Engineer
Role Summary
Develop firmware and embedded software for all-day wearable AI research platforms within Reality Labs Research. Work across the stack from MCU peripheral bring-up to SoC-level integration to enable sensing, imaging, and on-device compute pipelines.
Collaborate with cross-disciplinary research and engineering teams to deliver prototypes from early requirements through board bring-up and system integration.
Experience Level
Senior — typically requires 7+ years of software development experience in embedded systems or firmware, or a PhD with 4+ years of relevant experience.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and debug firmware and embedded software for sensing and imaging systems.
- Implement firmware on microcontrollers and SoCs; manage peripherals, power consumption, boot loaders, and RTOS scheduling.
- Drive firmware architecture and system bring-up across hardware development phases, from requirements to board bring-up.
- Build and maintain device drivers and integrate multi-processor/multi-subsystem designs (MCU + SoC).
- Use hardware debugging tools and perform register-level system debugging and diagnostics.
- Define and champion embedded development practices, track progress, and communicate technical decisions to stakeholders.
- Apply AI-assisted tools and workflows where they improve development speed, testing, or documentation quality.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience:
- 7+ years software development experience in embedded systems, firmware, or related fields (or PhD with 4+ years).
- 3+ years of embedded software development experience in industry settings.
- Proficient in C and C++ for embedded development.
- Experience building drivers for custom hardware and implementing serial protocols (synchronous/asynchronous).
- Hands-on experience with hardware debugging tools (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, protocol decoders) and register-level debugging.
- Experience with real-time operating systems (e.g., Zephyr, FreeRTOS, or equivalent).
- Experience architecting embedded systems spanning multiple processors or subsystems (MCU and SoC integration).
Nice-to-have:
- Familiarity with wireless protocol stacks (BLE, Wi‑Fi, proprietary RF).
- AOSP native experience and SoC bring-up (Qualcomm, NXP, ARM Cortex families).
- Experience with camera/imaging subsystems (ISP, MIPI CSI/DSI).
- Experience integrating AI-assisted development tools and workflows.
- Experience working with international manufacturing partners and research/prototyping environments.
Education Requirements
B.S. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. The posting also accepts a PhD with 4+ years of relevant experience; an M.S. is listed as preferred. (Equivalent experience language is present.)
