Embedded Software Architect
Role Summary
Lead architecture and integration of embedded software with semiconductor hardware, focusing on hardware/software co-design, system optimization, and process improvements across product teams.
Collaborate with hardware architects, firmware engineers, and senior leadership to define system-level requirements, mentor engineering teams, and introduce tools and practices that improve performance, reliability, and development efficiency.
Experience Level
Senior-level; requires 7+ years of experience in software architecture with substantial hardware/software co-design exposure.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Lead hardware/software co-design and system architecture for embedded platforms.
- Design and architect low-level firmware, device drivers, and OS interactions for resource-constrained and high-performance hardware.
- Drive process and toolchain improvements across software and hardware development.
- Collaborate with hardware teams on specifications, integration, and debugging of hardware/software issues.
- Optimize software for performance, power consumption, and real-time processing.
- Introduce and promote simulation, co-simulation, and debugging tools (e.g., ModelSim, Cadence) and hardware debug methods (JTAG, trace tools, logic analyzers).
- Present system architectures and strategy to senior leadership and influence technical direction.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineering teams; advocate best practices in embedded systems development.
Requirements
Must-have qualifications and skills:
- 7+ years in software architecture with hardware/software co-design experience in the semiconductor or related industries.
- Proven experience with embedded systems programming: low-level firmware, device drivers, RTOS, and bare-metal development.
- Proficiency in C, C++ and Python in embedded development environments.
- Experience with FPGA, SoC or ASIC platforms and a clear understanding of hardware/software interactions.
- Experience using debugging and profiling tools (JTAG, logic analyzers, trace tools) and simulation environments.
- Strong knowledge of the embedded software development lifecycle, including CI, version control, and testing strategies.
- Expertise in real-time systems, memory management, and performance optimization techniques.
- Ability to work independently, lead change, and communicate effectively with both technical teams and senior leadership.
- Willingness to travel up to 10%.
- May require export licensing for access to technical data; candidates may need eligibility or approval.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with hardware/software co-simulation and virtual prototyping tools.
- Experience with IoT devices or wireless communication systems integrated with semiconductor hardware.
- Familiarity with agile development processes in hardware/software teams.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field as stated in the posting.
