Job Title
Embedded Firmware Engineer
Role Summary
Develop and validate embedded firmware for low-power mixed-signal integrated circuits. Work across pre-silicon simulation, FPGA prototyping, silicon bring-up, and lab characterization to deliver production-ready firmware and diagnostics.
Collaborate with system, digital, analog, verification and test teams to define firmware architecture, optimize performance/power/trade-offs, and support product and application engineering.
Experience Level
Mid-level — the role expects experienced engineers; minimum ~4+ years industry experience in embedded firmware for integrated circuits.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include firmware development, validation, and cross-functional support from specification through production.
- Define, develop, verify and optimize embedded firmware functions and subsystems for mixed-signal ICs; produce technical documentation and participate in design reviews.
- Implement testability and diagnostic features to support hardware testing and manufacturing.
- Define and execute pre-silicon simulation validation, unit and regression tests; support emulation, FPGA prototyping and top-level verification.
- Participate in system and digital hardware–firmware architecture definition, specification analysis and firmware optimization for power, speed and resource trade-offs.
- Support silicon lab evaluation, performance characterization and hardware debug.
- Interface with system, digital hardware, analog, verification and cross-functional teams; provide technical support to test, product and application engineers.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience; followed by concise nice-to-have items.
-
Must-have: 4+ years industry experience in embedded firmware development for integrated circuits.
- Proven experience with real-time embedded systems, data-path and signal-processing firmware, and system trade-offs (power, speed, hardware resources).
- Experience with MCU-based systems (ARM, RISC-V, PIC, STM32) and instruction set architectures.
- Proficiency in C/C++ and assembly programming; scripting experience (Python); strong debugging skills and familiarity with embedded IDEs and toolchains.
- Design-for-test experience including implementation of testability and diagnostic features; experience with version control, release management, and unit/regression testing.
- Familiarity with standard hardware protocols: I2C, I3C, SPI, MIPI, JTAG, PCIe.
- Strong analytical, synthesis and problem-solving skills; ability to take technical ownership and execute.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and teamwork skills.
-
Nice-to-have: bare-metal firmware and RTOS experience; mixed-signal IC firmware; hands-on lab instrumentation (FPGAs, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes); Matlab, SystemVerilog/Verilog/VHDL experience; consumer/ITA market circuit experience.
Education Requirements
B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering.
