Embedded Firmware Engineer
Advanced Micro DevicesJob Title
Embedded Firmware Engineer
Role Summary
Develop and verify embedded firmware for mixed-signal power-management IP and contribute to RTL design and verification for the hardware the firmware controls.
Work spans ROM-based firmware development, firmware/RTL co-simulation, pre- and post-silicon bring-up, and cross-functional collaboration with analog, RTL, systems, and product engineering teams.
Experience Level
Mid-level. The posting does not specify years of experience but requires demonstrated embedded firmware and hardware-interaction experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include firmware development, verification, hardware support, and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
- Design, implement, and maintain bare-metal C/C++ firmware for mixed-signal power-management ICs.
- Own firmware architecture for boot/reset sequencing, interrupt handling, communication, fault detection, and response.
- Define and maintain the firmware/hardware interface, including register maps and programming model.
- Optimize firmware for tight ROM footprint, RAM usage, and real-time response constraints.
- Define and execute firmware verification strategy: unit tests, firmware/RTL co-simulation, and regression automation.
- Debug firmware against RTL in simulation and emulation environments and drive failures to root cause across the hardware/software boundary.
- Ensure firmware code quality and release readiness ahead of ROM freeze; support post-silicon bring-up and validation on silicon.
- Contribute to SystemVerilog RTL design and verification as project needs require and partner with verification teams to cover firmware-driven scenarios.
- Participate in design and code reviews and mentor engineers on embedded firmware practice.
Requirements
Must-have skills and preferred qualifications.
- Must-have: Strong C/C++ programming for resource-constrained, bare-metal embedded targets.
- Must-have: Experience developing firmware against hardware register interfaces and performing bring-up on pre-silicon models and on silicon.
- Must-have: Proficiency with embedded toolchains, debuggers, and scripting (Python).
- Must-have: Demonstrated ability to debug across the firmware/hardware boundary and to deliver high-quality firmware for ROM/non-patchable targets.
- Preferred: SystemVerilog RTL design and/or verification experience in an ASIC design environment; firmware/RTL co-simulation, emulation, or FPGA prototyping experience.
- Preferred: Familiarity with control and telemetry interfaces such as I2C, SPI, APB, SVID, or PMBus; post-silicon bring-up and debug experience.
- Visa sponsorship: This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science.
