Job Title

Electrical/System Engineer

Role Summary

Join the Applied Materials CoE team to develop a new family of semiconductor process tool sensors. The role focuses on sensor transducer design and testing, analog and digital circuit design, prototype bring-up and debugging, firmware validation, and coordinating PCB suppliers.

Experience Level

Mid-level - requires 4+ years' experience in optical or THz/GHz sensor development.

Responsibilities

Deliver hardware and firmware components of sensor systems and lead integration and verification activities.

  • Perform design, testing, and analysis of sensors and sensor transducers with limited supervision.
  • Collaborate with sensor architects, physicists, and system software/hardware engineers to deliver complete sensor solutions.
  • Design, build, and validate optical benches; characterize lasers, amplifiers, and detectors across UV to MWIR wavelengths.
  • Integrate PCBs and embedded firmware; manage prototype bring-up, vendor PCBs, and debugging activities.
  • Integrate sensors into chamber/tool platforms; verify and troubleshoot system hardware and software.
  • Participate in schematic, layout, and BOM reviews and drive continuous improvement of electrical designs.
  • Create and execute system requirements and test procedures for sensors and sensing systems.
  • Provide timely status updates and proactive communication to stakeholders.

Requirements

Core qualifications and desirable skills.

  • Must-have: 4+ years of experience in optical or THz/GHz sensor development.
  • Must-have: Strong knowledge of semiconductor processes, associated physics, and vacuum process tools.
  • Must-have: Fundamental training in lasers, optics, and electromagnetic wave devices and physics.
  • Must-have: Ability to work independently, meet objectives and deadlines, and collaborate with remote teams.
  • Must-have: Strong analytical skills and methodical problem-solving.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience testing and debugging optical systems/optoelectronic assemblies and photodetectors/sources (PDs, IR, LEDs).
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with optical design tools such as LightTools or Zemax.
  • Nice-to-have: Embedded firmware development experience.
  • Nice-to-have: FPGA experience.
  • Nice-to-have: Familiarity with industrial communication standards such as EtherCAT or DeviceNet.

Education Requirements

MS or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field.
