Job Title
E-core CPU Layout Design Engineer
Role Summary
The E-core CPU Layout Design Engineer performs physical implementation of memory compilers and custom IP blocks for Intel Atom microprocessors. The role focuses on transistor/cell-level layout, assembly, routing, and methodology development to support CPU product design.
This position works closely with circuit engineers, design automation, and mask design teams to deliver production-quality layouts, DFM validation, and engineering trade-off analysis.
Experience Level
Senior β 10+ years of layout design experience.
Responsibilities
Core duties include hands-on layout work, cross-functional collaboration, and methodology improvement:
- Perform transistor/device and cell-level planning, layout, assembly, and routing for memory building blocks and custom IP.
- Implement layouts for memory compiler components (control, sense amplifiers, I/O blocks, bit cell arrays, decoders) in a compiler context.
- Use CAD/layout tools for editing, verification, DFM and quality assurance; apply productivity macros and established workflows.
- Bridge circuit engineering, design automation, and mask design; coordinate feasibility studies and design options with DA teams and senior engineers.
- Analyze and resolve electrical and reliability issues (IR drop, electromigration, self-heating); assess ECO feasibility, effort, risk, and schedule.
- Define and refine layout methodologies for memory compilers and custom IP; establish and implement recommendations.
- Plan and execute complex layout assignments independently and deliver to schedule; communicate progress and trade-offs to stakeholders.
Requirements
Essential skills and experience required for immediate contribution; additional desirable skills listed separately.
Must-have:
- 10+ years of professional layout design experience.
- Proficient with CAD/layout tools, layout verification and DFM practices.
- Experience with memory compiler contexts and memory building block layouts.
- Programming/scripting skills: UNIX shell scripting, Tcl, Perl.
- Experience performing IR drop, reliability (electromigration, thermal) and ECO assessments.
- Strong problem-solving, prioritization, and written/verbal communication skills.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with RF custom IP blocks or other custom analog/digital IP layout.
- Prior work defining methodology with design automation teams.
Education Requirements
Candidate must possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electronic/Microelectronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
