Display Panel Design Engineer
AppleJob Title
Display Panel Design Engineer
Role Summary
Design and develop Thin Film Transistor (TFT) pixel and panel architectures and bring advanced display technologies to production for Apple products. The role focuses on panel modeling, device and on-panel IC design, simulation, layout, characterization, and building automation to accelerate design iteration.
Experience Level
Mid-level (no explicit years-of-experience specified).
Responsibilities
Deliver complete TFT pixel and panel designs, improve simulation fidelity, and enable production-ready panel implementations.
- Scope and define TFT panel architecture and pixel designs.
- Design TFT devices, perform modeling, simulation, and electrical/optical characterization.
- Create pixel and panel layouts and perform parasitic RC extraction.
- Design and validate on-panel integrated circuits for rigid and flexible substrates.
- Develop and maintain automation for panel simulation, characterization, and measurement data analysis.
- Establish simulation methodology and best practices for the panel design team.
- Perform failure-mode analysis, root-cause investigation, and problem solving.
- Explore, validate, and integrate new TFT and display technologies.
- Support international travel for project implementation and manufacturing ramp.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (process, optics, touch, display electronics, mechanical) and external vendors.
Requirements
Core technical skills and hands-on experience required; preferred qualifications listed after.
Must-have:
- Hands-on experience creating 2D physical layout in CAD environments (e.g., Cadence Virtuoso, Synopsys Laker) including design-rule checks and parasitic RC extraction.
- Hands-on experience with circuit simulation using a SPICE-class simulator (e.g., Spectre, HSPICE), including device model setup and result interpretation.
- Practical understanding of TFT, OLED, and panel processes.
Nice-to-have:
- Direct design ownership of an OLED or LCD display product that reached high-volume production.
- Experience in display touch and related system integration.
- Experience measuring and characterizing IV and CV of TFT or OLED devices.
- Experience characterizing panel optical and electrical performance.
- Experience in gate/column driver IC and other display electronics designs.
- Experience building repeatable automation for simulation, measurement, and data-analysis flows (for example Python-driven SPICE sweeps, layout scripting, parametric extraction).
- Effective use of AI-assisted development tools with appropriate verification practices.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Education Requirements
Minimum: Bachelor's degree. Preferred: advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Electrical Engineering with focus on thin-film devices, display circuits, or semiconductor device physics.
