Director, RTL Design

Role Summary

Lead an RTL/IP design team responsible for SoC digital implementation and delivery from RTL through GDSII. Provide technical direction, define implementation and verification strategies, and coordinate cross-functional execution to meet product and foundry technology requirements.

Experience Level

Senior-level; preferred 15+ years of SoC design, verification, and implementation experience. This role requires significant leadership experience and technical ownership.

Responsibilities

Accountable for technical leadership, on-time delivery, and cross-functional coordination for complex SoC/IP projects. Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead and mentor RTL/IP design teams; ensure architecture and design tasks are completed on schedule.
  • Develop implementation strategies to meet system and customer requirements; act as technical expert for complex architecture, design, and verification issues.
  • Define and drive verification and test strategies; add test cases to fully understand and analyze complex bugs.
  • Oversee power and performance checks; interpret reports and define mitigation plans.
  • Review and approve technical documentation and requirements for large projects.
  • Drive cross-functional alignment in design and project reviews; represent technical interests to stakeholders and senior leadership.
  • Ensure major projects are driven to completion on time and on budget; identify and secure resources for technical opportunities.
  • Lead resolution of critical design–technology interaction issues and contribute to foundry technology roadmap decisions.

Requirements

Essential technical and leadership qualifications (must-haves listed first; preferred items noted):

  • Deep expertise in digital RTL design and SoC design flows, including RTL-to-GDSII delivery.
  • Strong knowledge of SoC architectures; ARM architecture experience is a plus.
  • Familiarity with bus protocols such as AHB, AXI, ACE, and ACE-Lite.
  • Proven ability to resolve highly complex architecture, design, or verification problems with incomplete or conflicting requirements.
  • Proven track record of leading teams and delivering large, complex projects.
  • 5+ years of experience interacting with senior leadership (e.g., VP level and above).
  • Experience working with foundry technology selection and resolving design–technology integration issues (preferred).

Education Requirements

Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Engineering, or a related field. Minimum experience tied to degree: Bachelor's +8+ years, Master's +7+ years, PhD +6+ years in Hardware Engineering or related work. Preferred candidates have ~15+ years of SoC design, verification, synthesis/implementation experience.
