FractileJob Title
Developer Operations / DevOps — Bazel Monorepo
Role Summary
The DevOps Engineer will join the Developer Experience team and own the company's Bazel monorepo and CI/CD infrastructure used across ML, systems, firmware, drivers and verification workloads. The role combines build-system engineering with SRE responsibilities: designing reproducible builds and pipelines, improving CI reliability and performance, and providing observability for the engineering organisation.
Experience Level
Mid-level. The role expects roughly 5+ years in software or infrastructure engineering, including at least 3 years working with build systems.
Responsibilities
The core responsibilities focus on monorepo tooling, CI reliability, and observability.
- Design, implement, and maintain Bazel rules and extensions across multiple languages and workloads (Python, C++, Rust, SystemVerilog, ML).
- Scale and optimise a large monorepo to support growth and multi-language builds.
- Create reproducible multi-language build and CI pipelines.
- Debug, triage and resolve CI pipeline failures; perform systematic root cause analysis.
- Improve CI performance across large compute clusters.
- Build and maintain infrastructure monitoring and observability (metrics, dashboards, alerts).
- Define alerting thresholds, runbooks, and incident response workflows for build and CI infrastructure.
- Contribute upstream to Bazel rules and related open-source tooling used by the company.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to shape developer experience and productivity tooling.
Requirements
Core technical requirements and desirable skills.
- Must-have: 5+ years in software or infrastructure engineering.
- Must-have: 3+ years working with build systems and strong hands-on experience with Bazel.
- Must-have: Python scripting and automation skills.
- Must-have: Experience with CI/CD for large-scale products and debugging pipeline failures at scale.
- Must-have: Familiarity with infrastructure monitoring/observability tools (for example Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog).
- Must-have: Working knowledge of SRE principles (SLOs, alerting design, incident management, on-call practices).
- Nice-to-have: Experience across ML workloads, compilers, kernel drivers, hardware simulation or verification.
- Nice-to-have: Prior contributions to upstream Bazel rules or related OSS build tooling.
- May require eligibility checks for UK, US or other export control regulations for certain roles.
Education Requirements
Not specified.
