Design Thermal Engineer
Role Summary
As a Design Thermal Engineer on the Full Chip Global Power Intent Thermal Team, you will perform thermal design, analysis, verification and optimization for FPGA products across die, package, board and software integration. You will drive thermal closure, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and support power-intent and system-level EM/IR validation.
Altera develops programmable solutions including FPGAs and related IP; this role contributes to product thermal reliability and power-intent verification.
Experience Level
Mid-level: minimum 4 years of industry experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include thermal verification, power-intent validation, and cross-functional signoff.
- Perform thermal analysis and verification for die, package, board and software integration.
- Drive system-level thermal closure and signoff through cross-functional collaboration and debugging.
- Participate in power-intent verification using UPF and support power electrical rule checking and rollup at die/package level.
- Support system EM and IR closure and provide input to die/package bump and ball planning.
- Use and validate thermal tools and simulation results to inform design trade-offs.
- Develop and maintain scripts and automation to streamline verification and analysis workflows.
- Communicate findings and present technical results to engineering stakeholders.
Requirements
Key must-have skills and preferred qualifications.
- Minimum 4 years of industry experience in thermal or related hardware verification.
- Familiarity with thermal analysis tools and thermal verification workflows.
- Proficient in scripting: PERL, Python, TCL and comfortable with Linux shell environments.
- Strong execution focus with proven ability to close complex design issues.
- Good communication and presentation skills for cross-functional collaboration.

Nice-to-have: experience with UPF, Verdi, Redhawk, power IR/EM analysis, physical design flows, and power sequencing.
Education Requirements
BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering.
