Design Engineer — Place and Route (PNR) / Static Timing Analysis (STA)
Role Summary
Work on place-and-route and static timing analysis for complex digital IP subsystems and semi-custom macros in advanced process technologies within Broadcom's Central Engineering Group.
Responsible for developing and automating PNR/STA flows, achieving timing closure, floorplanning and power-integrity (EM/IR) analysis, and coordinating with synthesis, STA and design teams.
Experience Level
Mid-level. Posting specifies B.S. with 4+ years or M.S. with 2+ years of relevant experience.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include planning, automation, and timing closure of complex designs.
- Develop netlist-to-GDSII automation flows using PNR tools (ICC2, Innovus) for advanced nodes.
- Define floorplan, placement, routing, and timing constraints to meet DRC/LVS and timing requirements.
- Perform PNR architecture studies including multi power-island planning and EM/IR analysis.
- Automate constraints and flows to reduce ECOs and enable predictable timing closure.
- Correlate ICC and STA timing reports and resolve timing violations with synthesis/STA/DNE teams.
- Implement ECOs and use tools (e.g., Tweaker) as needed for fixes.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience.
- Hands-on experience with synthesis and PNR tools such as ICC2, Innovus, Fusion Compiler and timing tools like PrimeTime.
- Proven ability to define ICC/synthesis constraints and close timing for designs with multiple frequency domains.
- Strong scripting and automation skills (TCL, Perl, Python) to build end-to-end PNR/STA flows and analyze reports.
- Knowledge of signal and power floorplanning with focus on minimizing EM/IR issues.
- Experience with STA options, de-rating techniques, and cross-talk mitigation.
- Experience with Synopsys timing closure tools (Star-RC, PrimeTime, PTSI); exposure to Cadence flows is a plus.
- Ability to work across teams and geographies and drive complex projects to completion.
Education Requirements
B.S. degree with a minimum of 4+ years' relevant experience, or M.S. degree with a minimum of 2+ years' relevant experience (as specified in the posting).
