Design Automation & Quality Assurance Engineering Intern (FY27, Canada, 16-month)
Role Summary
The intern will develop software tools, scripts, and automation to improve semiconductor design workflows, release qualification, and engineering productivity. Projects may include database and web application development, test and validation of engineering tools, release readiness checks, reporting, and AI-assisted tooling.
Work with cross-functional teams (design, methodology, custom layout, QA) and receive mentorship from experienced engineers. Note: export-license requirements may affect start dates for candidates from certain countries.
Experience Level
Entry-level internship for current students. Suitable for candidates with limited professional experience (student/academic experience preferred).
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Develop and maintain automation scripts and software tools to streamline chip design and verification workflows.
- Implement and validate release qualification and quality-assurance processes.
- Build reporting, tracking systems, dashboards, and web interfaces to support engineering teams.
- Create and run automated tests and validation frameworks for engineering tools.
- Collaborate with design, methodology, layout, and QA teams to identify automation opportunities and integrate solutions.
- Document implementations and provide handoff/knowledge transfer to engineering teams.
Requirements
Must-have and preferred skills for successful candidates.
- Must-have: Proficiency in at least one scripting or programming language (example: Python).
- Must-have: Strong problem-solving, analytical ability, attention to detail, and effective written and verbal communication.
- Must-have: Ability to work collaboratively on cross-functional engineering teams and eagerness to learn new tools and domains.
- Nice-to-have: Experience with JavaScript, C++, Perl, or shell scripting; familiarity with Linux/Unix and command-line tools.
- Nice-to-have: Understanding of semiconductor/VLSI/IC design flows or experience with EDA tools (e.g., Cadence Virtuoso, Siemens Calibre).
- Nice-to-have: Experience with databases (MongoDB, MySQL, NoSQL), web frameworks (React, Angular), version control (Git/SVN), automated testing, or AI-assisted development tools.
Education Requirements
Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree (Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Engineering Science, Computer Science, or related technical field). For 16-month internships: available May/June 2027 through August/September 2028. Expected graduation date November 2028 or later. At least 1+ years of academic experience with programming languages such as C, C++, or Python.
