Job Title

Design Automation Engineer

Role Summary

Develop and maintain backend systems and AI/LLM-driven engineering platforms that convert semiconductor design data into structured, queryable representations and enable natural-language interaction for architects, designers, and verification engineers. The role sits at the intersection of AI, software infrastructure, and semiconductor design within AMD's engineering platform team.

Experience Level

Mid-level - expected to have several years of professional software engineering experience building production backend systems and data pipelines. Exact years not specified.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities focus on building scalable data infrastructure, AI-driven retrieval and agentic capabilities, and ensuring platform reliability and performance.

  • Design, build, and maintain backend data pipelines that convert engineering data sources into structured, queryable representations.
  • Design and evolve data schemas and queries to support new engineering data types and production-scale workloads.
  • Build and extend AI/LLM-based components to enable natural-language querying and interaction with engineering data.
  • Diagnose and resolve reliability and performance issues in distributed batch-processing pipelines handling large data volumes.
  • Design and implement new pipelines to onboard additional engineering data domains onto the platform.
  • Tune LLM-based components for accuracy, cost, and latency.
  • Own a TDD-driven development workflow, including version control and code review practices.
  • Collaborate with architecture, verification, and design teams to translate data and workflow needs into platform capabilities.

Requirements

Must-have and preferred skills for successful candidates.

Must-have:

  • Proven Python engineering experience in large, shared codebases with rigorous testing (unit/integration/end-to-end).
  • Experience designing and operating production backend systems and large-scale data pipelines.
  • Experience designing data models and query schemas for retrieval workloads.
  • Ability to diagnose and fix reliability and performance issues in distributed batch-processing pipelines.
  • Familiarity with TDD, version control, and code review practices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate across software and hardware teams.
  • This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with graph databases and/or vector search systems, including schema design and query performance tuning.
  • Experience with LLM-based or agentic systems: retrieval-augmented generation, agent orchestration, tool-use/function-calling, and cost/latency tradeoffs.
  • Familiarity with RTL/HDL/Physical Design semantics and toolchains (SystemVerilog/Verilog) for parsing and elaboration of hardware design sources.
  • Experience with time-series and relational data stores and reasoning about consistency across multiple database backends.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field as stated by the employer.
