Design Application Engineering
GlobalFoundriesJob Title
Design Application Engineering
Role Summary
The Application Engineer provides IC design and development solutions and drives customer design enablement from initial engagement through tapeout and production ramp. The role focuses on Power Management Integrated Circuits (PMICs) and coordinates cross-functional teams to resolve technical and methodology issues.
Experience Level
Mid-level. Typical experience guidance in the posting: Bachelor's +5 years, Master's +3 years, or PhD +2 years.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include customer support, technical leadership, and improving design-enablement capabilities for PMIC and related designs.
- Partner with customers and internal teams to resolve design, application, and design-enablement issues for PMICs (battery chargers, DC-DC converters, LDOs, power switches).
- Serve as a technical champion: translate customer requirements into practical design and implementation solutions and validate proposals against objectives.
- Identify and drive resolution of technical and enablement gaps affecting customer designs.
- Coordinate solutions across PDK, device modeling, IP, EDA, reliability, product engineering, quality, and sales.
- Manage technical scope, deliverables, milestones, dependencies, risks, and recovery plans for assigned customer projects.
- Provide technical guidance via case resolution, design reviews, training, documentation, and mentoring.
- Develop and maintain reusable technical resources: application notes, reference flows, runbooks, and troubleshooting guidance.
- Drive continuous improvement in Application Engineering processes, automation, and standards.
- Perform all activities in a safe, compliant manner and support EHS&S programs.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, practical abilities, and workplace competencies required to perform the role.
- Working knowledge of PMIC technology and circuit design development through tape-out (battery chargers, DC-DC converters, LDOs, power switches).
- Demonstrated expertise in at least one relevant discipline and proficiency in a second (examples: IC design, EDA tools/methodologies, semiconductor technology applications, design enablement).
- Working knowledge of semiconductor design-enablement components and interfaces, including PDKs, device models, IP, EDA tools, reliability, and product engineering.
- Proven troubleshooting skills: investigate root causes and resolve complex or non-recurring technical issues.
- Experience collaborating with customers and cross-functional teams to coordinate technical work and represent Application Engineering.
- Ability to independently manage technical tasks and projects, including tracking deliverables, milestones, dependencies, risks, and customer follow-up.
- Ability to lead technical discussions and provide guidance through case support, design reviews, training, and documentation.
- Strong technical writing, presentation, and communication skills for technical and customer audiences.
- Demonstrated accountability, continuous improvement mindset, and experience mentoring or training less-experienced engineers.
Education Requirements
Degree and experience options listed in the posting: Bachelor's degree with 5+ years of relevant experience; Master's degree with 3+ years of relevant experience; or PhD with 2+ years of relevant experience.
