Job Title

Defect Inspection Engineer (f/m/d)

Role Summary

Perform automated optical inspection (AOI) and unpatterned wafer inspection in a cleanroom to ensure defect-free semiconductor wafers for an integrated graphene photonics process flow.

Collaborate with process, equipment and integration teams to set up, qualify and optimize inspection recipes, troubleshoot inspection issues, analyze defect data and improve detection and classification.

Experience Level

Mid-level. The role expects approximately 5+ years of experience in semiconductor inspection, particularly AOI and unpatterned wafer inspection.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include operating inspection tools, analyzing defect data, and working with cross-functional teams to improve yield and inspection performance.

  • Perform AOI and unpatterned wafer inspection on bare silicon, epitaxial layers and polished wafers.
  • Set up, qualify and optimize inspection recipes and tool parameters for sensitivity, repeatability and inspection quality.
  • Fine-tune inspection tools and recipes to improve defect-detection performance.
  • Analyze defect data to identify trends, root causes and process excursions; generate defect maps and Pareto charts.
  • Translate defect findings into actionable recommendations for process teams.
  • Participate in DOE to optimize inspection parameters and validate changes.
  • Troubleshoot inspection-related issues and support continuous improvement in defect detection and classification.
  • Collaborate with process, equipment and integration teams to implement fixes and preventive measures.

Requirements

Must-have and preferred technical qualifications relevant to inspection and defect analysis.

Must-have:

  • 5+ years of experience in semiconductor inspection focused on AOI and unpatterned wafer inspection.
  • Hands-on experience with unpatterned wafer inspection systems (e.g., SPx) and AOI tools (e.g., Eagle, Dragonfly).
  • Proficiency with AOI and defect-review software such as KLA Klarity and Camtek Inspecta.
  • Understanding of semiconductor process flows including polishing, epitaxy and cleaning; familiarity with SEM review and SPC.
  • Experience analyzing defect data and producing defect maps, Pareto charts and reports.
  • Ability to optimize inspection tools and recipes for sensitivity, quality and repeatability.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills for cross-functional collaboration.

Nice-to-have:

  • Proficiency in JMP for statistical analysis, data visualization and DOE.
  • Familiarity with MATLAB or Python for data analysis and automation.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree or above in electrical engineering, materials science, physics or a related technical field (as stated). No explicit mention of equivalent-experience language was provided.
