Cryo RFIC Design Engineer, Quantum
GlobalFoundriesJob Title
Cryo RFIC Design Engineer, Quantum
Role Summary
Design and deliver high-performance RF and microwave integrated circuits and reusable IP for advanced semiconductor applications, with emphasis on cryogenic CMOS and quantum systems. The role covers architecture, transistor-level design, electromagnetic-aware layout, tapeout, and silicon characterization while collaborating with device modeling, PDK, packaging, and test teams.
Experience Level
Senior-level. Minimum 5 years of relevant RF/microwave or analog IC design experience (job specifies a Senior RF IC Design Engineer).
Responsibilities
The engineer will own RFIC development through all phases and support silicon bring-up and characterization.
- Design RF/microwave ICs and reusable IP: LNAs, PAs, mixers, oscillators, VCOs, frequency synthesizers, RF switches, phase shifters, matching networks.
- Lead schematic-level design, simulation, EM-aware layout, DRC/LVS, parasitic extraction, tapeout, and silicon validation.
- Perform RF circuit analysis across process, voltage, and temperature: S-parameters, noise figure, gain, linearity, stability, phase noise, power, and impedance matching.
- Drive electromagnetic simulation and modeling of passives, interconnects, transmission lines, inductors, transformers, and critical layout structures.
- Optimize circuits for power, bandwidth, noise, linearity, area, process variation, package/interconnect parasitics, and cryogenic performance.
- Define silicon test structures, develop characterization plans, analyze measured data, and correlate results with simulations.
- Lead technical design reviews, document methodology and results, and mentor other engineers.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with technology, PDK, modeling, packaging, and test teams to improve design enablement.
- Perform work in compliance with Environmental, Health, Safety & Security requirements.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience required for successful performance in the role.
Must-have:
- Minimum 5 years of RF, microwave, or analog integrated circuit design experience.
- Proven experience taking RF/microwave ICs through schematic design, simulation, layout, DRC/LVS, parasitic extraction, tapeout, and silicon validation.
- Strong knowledge of RF fundamentals: impedance matching, S-parameters, stability, noise, linearity, phase noise, RF power, passive networks, and transmission-line effects.
- Proficiency with RFIC design tools: circuit simulation, EM simulation, layout, physical verification, and post-layout extraction workflows.
- Experience with RF measurement and test equipment (VNA, spectrum analyzer, signal generators, noise-figure measurement, RF probing).
- Willingness to travel up to 10% and fluency in written and verbal English.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with cryogenic RFICs, quantum readout/control electronics, millimeter-wave circuits, or advanced RF front ends.
- Familiarity with CMOS device and passive-component behavior and compact-model limitations at RF/cryogenic conditions.
- Experience with on-wafer RF characterization and correlating measured results to circuit, device, EM, and package models.
- Scripting/automation experience using Python, SKILL, Tcl, MATLAB, or equivalent.
- Experience designing advanced RF blocks: LNAs, PAs, mixers, VCOs, PLLs, RF switches, phase shifters, and integrated matching networks.
- Project management and strong communication, planning, and organizational skills.
Education Requirements
Required: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Microelectronics, Applied Physics, or a related field. Preferred: Master’s degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Microelectronics, RF/Microwave Engineering, or a related field. (Degrees and fields explicitly listed in the posting.)
