CPU Synthesis CAD Engineer
Role Summary
Work on synthesis and implementation flows for custom CPU designs to optimize power, performance, and area. The role partners with CPU physical design teams and EDA vendors to develop, integrate, and maintain high-performance synthesis toolchains and methodology.
Experience Level
Senior-level. Preferred 8+ years hands-on experience in synthesis and place-and-route; minimum practical experience varies by degree (see Education Requirements).
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include improving synthesis methodology, releasing synthesis flow features, and supporting CPU physical design projects.
- Develop, integrate, test, and release features in synthesis and implementation flows.
- Architect methodology improvements to optimize power, performance, and area.
- Maintain, debug, and support synthesis/implementation flows and resolve project-specific issues.
- Provide synthesis methodology guidance to worldwide CPU physical design teams.
- Collaborate with EDA vendors to define roadmaps and resolve tool issues.
- Write and review technical documentation; evaluate design lifecycle through post-silicon validation.
- Mentor and provide guidance to other engineers; make decisions with impact beyond the immediate group.
Requirements
Must-have skills and experience for successful execution of the role.
- Extensive hands-on experience in synthesis and place-and-route for high-performance chips.
- Proficiency in Tcl and Python for flow development and automation.
- Experience with automation of CAD flows and regression management.
- Familiarity with front-end synthesis tasks: logic synthesis, physical synthesis, LEC, UPF, and front-end signoff.
- Experience using synthesis tools such as Cadence Genus or Synopsys Fusion Compiler.
- Ability to debug complex flows and resolve tool or methodology issues.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; experience collaborating across cross-functional teams.
Education Requirements
One of the following is required: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field plus 6+ years relevant experience; OR Master's degree in the same fields plus 5+ years relevant experience; OR PhD in the same fields plus 4+ years relevant experience. Equivalent practical experience is accepted where noted.
