CPU Core Design Verification Engineer

Role Summary

Verify microarchitectural features for AMD's next-generation x86 CPU cores at the unit- and core-level. Work in a C++ and Verilog/SystemVerilog verification environment, owning test plans, stimulus, checking, and coverage for assigned areas.

Work with RTL designers, architects, and verification engineers in Austin, TX. This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Experience Level

Mid-level (mid-career). Typical candidate: several years of verification or CPU/microarchitecture experience; specific years not stated.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities focus on developing and delivering verification for CPU microarchitecture.

• Collaborate with RTL designers, architects, and verification engineers to define verification requirements and corner cases.
• Own test plans, stimulus, checking, and functional coverage for assigned unit- or core-level areas.
• Design, implement, and maintain C++- and SystemVerilog-based testbench components using modular, reusable verification agent patterns.
• Write and maintain SystemVerilog assertions and functional coverage models.
• Debug simulation failures, perform root-cause analysis, and coordinate fixes with RTL or testbench owners.
• Drive functional and code coverage closure; identify verification gaps and improve stimulus and checking.
• Apply AI-assisted and agent-based tools to improve verification productivity.

Requirements

Must-have skills and attributes, followed by desirable additions.

• Strong fundamentals in computer architecture and processor microarchitecture.
• Experience developing verification infrastructure and testbenches using SystemVerilog and/or C++.
• Ability to analyze microarchitectural behavior and apply standard verification methods (coverage-driven, assertions, checking).
• Experience debugging simulations and performing independent root-cause analysis.
• Self-motivated, able to plan work over weeks-to-months and deliver with limited supervision; effective cross-team communicator.
• Nice-to-have: RTL/Verilog knowledge, constrained-random testing experience, assembly/ISA-level understanding, exposure to formal or commercial verification tools (VCS, Cadence, Mentor Graphics), scripting (Python/Perl).

Education Requirements

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
