Job Title

Compiler Engineer

Role Summary

Work on Intel's LLVM-based compiler stack (C, C++, SYCL, Fortran) to implement new language features, optimizations, and backend code generation. The role involves upstream collaboration with the clang/LLVM open-source community and cross-team engineering to deliver performant compilers for Intel CPU and GPU platforms.

Experience Level

Mid-level. Typical experience: Bachelor's degree plus 5+ years, or Master's degree plus 3+ years of relevant experience in compiler development or equivalent practical experience.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  • Design, implement, and test compiler features and optimization passes in LLVM/clang.
  • Develop code generation and frontend integrations targeting Intel CPU and GPU architectures.
  • Contribute upstream to clang/LLVM (patches, reviews, commits) and collaborate with the open-source community.
  • Diagnose and fix complex compiler bugs; perform performance tuning and regression analysis.
  • Collaborate with language and toolchain teams to support new language standards and vendor-specific toolchain features.
  • Document design choices and mentor peers on compiler internals and best practices.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience:

  • Proficient in C/C++, object-oriented design, and common data structures.
  • Hands-on compiler development experience (frontend, IR transforms, or backend codegen).
  • Core LLVM expertise: building compiler components, implementing optimization passes, or code generation.
  • Proven history of technical contributions to open-source projects, ideally clang/LLVM (commits, patches, reviews).
  • Strong debugging, problem-solving, and systems-level reasoning skills.

Preferred:

  • Deep understanding of modern C/C++ language constructs and idioms.
  • Experience with oneAPI or similar vendor toolchain development.
  • Participation in language or standards committees (C, C++, Khronos, etc.).

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Informatics or a related technical discipline with 5+ years of relevant experience, OR Master's degree in those fields with 3+ years of relevant experience. Experience may be met through a combination of degree, research, previous jobs, or internships (equivalent practical experience acceptable).
