Camera System Engineer
Meta PlatformsJob Title
Camera System Engineer
Role Summary
Design and deliver camera, depth-sensing, and illumination modules (including thermal imaging) from new-technology initiatives (NTI) through new-product introduction (NPI). Own technical architecture, module requirements, vendor evaluation, system integration, qualification, and mass-production ramp working with cross-functional internal teams and offshore manufacturers.
Experience Level
Mid-level. Requires 6+ years of industry experience in optical sensing modules for consumer electronics or similar high-volume products.
Responsibilities
Primary technical owner responsible for end-to-end module delivery and cross-functional coordination.
- Serve as technical DRI for imaging/illumination modules from solution exploration through design, build, qualification, and ramp.
- Define and translate product features into system, module, and component-level requirements (frame rate, resolution, size, cost, power, etc.).
- Evaluate detectors, sensors, and vendor solutions; select components and define module specifications.
- Lead packaging, assembly definition, and test methods for consumer-grade mass production.
- Coordinate across architecture, sensor, mechanical, electrical, optical, validation, testing, quality, reliability, and system software teams.
- Work with offshore vendors and module integrators on bring-up, troubleshooting, failure analysis, and factory quality improvement.
- Perform DFMEA/PFMEA, design verification, and optical/module testing; own failure analysis and corrective actions.
- Analyze build and test data to validate designs and drive iterative improvements; maintain technical documentation and report status to stakeholders.
- Travel up to 20% domestically and internationally to vendors and manufacturing sites as needed.
Requirements
Must-have technical experience and skills for immediate contribution.
- 6+ years industry experience in optical sensing modules (camera modules, depth/ToF, structured light, stereo, active illumination) for consumer/high-volume products.
- Proven experience as a camera-module technical owner or equivalent end-to-end module ownership, including NTI to NPI transitions.
- Experience with packaging technology, assembly, and test methods at mass-production scale for camera, illumination, and projector modules.
- Familiarity with CMOS image sensors, thermal sensors, and illuminators (LED, VCSEL).
- Experience conducting detailed DFMEA and PFMEA and performing optical testing of modules.
- Experience working with offshore vendors and module integrators in manufacturing environments.
- Demonstrated ability to translate product features into system/module/component requirements and to handle complex, ambiguous problems across large cross-functional teams.
- Nice-to-have: High-volume consumer electronics product development experience; reliability testing knowledge; multi-modal sensing and sensor-fusion experience; experience integrating AI tools to optimize workflows.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
