BMC/OpenBMC Firmware Lead Engineer
Role Summary
The OpenBMC Firmware Lead Engineer will lead design, development, integration, verification, and release of OpenBMC firmware for server and storage platforms. This role provides technical leadership, drives architecture and implementation decisions, and coordinates with cross-functional teams to deliver production-quality firmware.
Experience Level
Senior level - requires approximately 8+ years of relevant firmware or embedded systems experience and prior leadership of firmware projects or teams.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include technical leadership across the firmware lifecycle and hands-on firmware development.
- Lead OpenBMC firmware design, development, integration, debugging, and board bring-up.
- Define firmware requirements, architecture, and implementation strategies.
- Plan and execute firmware validation, verification, and release activities.
- Drive technical planning, code reviews, risk identification, and mitigation.
- Mentor and guide junior and mid-level engineers; promote engineering best practices.
- Collaborate with project managers, architects, QA, and stakeholders to meet schedules.
- Create and maintain technical documentation and design specifications.
- Investigate, prioritize, and resolve system- and module-level defects.
- Promote CI/CD, release management, and software quality improvements.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience; nice-to-have items noted separately.
- Must-have: Strong hands-on experience with OpenBMC architecture, development, debugging, and source customization.
- Hands-on experience with Aspeed BMC SoCs (AST2500/AST2600/AST2700).
- Proficient with Yocto, BitBake, and embedded Linux build systems.
- Experience with OpenBMC platform bring-up and board porting; Linux kernel, device drivers, U-Boot, and IPC.
- Knowledge of BMC management features (SDR, SEL, FRU, SOL, IPMB, KCS, PEF, PECI) and firmware-hardware integration debugging.
- Experience with hardware interfaces (I2C/I3C, SPI, PMBus, LPC, UART, JTAG, GPIO, SGPIO).
- Proven ability to lead feature development, run technical reviews, and drive delivery.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills; ability to lead global technical discussions.
- Nice-to-have: Experience with IPMI, Redfish, PLDM, MCTP, SPDM, BIOS-BMC communication, and familiarity with Intel/AMD/ARM server platforms.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field is specified.
