BIOS Firmware Development Engineer
Intel CorporationJob Title
BIOS Firmware Development Engineer
Role Summary
Design and implement BIOS/firmware for IP and subsystem components within System-on-Chip (SoC) products, working across pre-silicon and post-silicon phases. The role involves hardware/firmware co-engineering, integration with platform teams, and enabling new silicon and platform features.
Experience Level
Mid-level. Typical experience examples in the posting include Bachelor's +4 years or Master's +3 years; PhD holders may qualify with less prior industry experience.
Responsibilities
Deliver end-to-end firmware and BIOS solutions for chiplet-based platforms and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure correct integration and validation.
- Drive design, implementation, integration, debug, and delivery of BIOS/firmware for IP, SoC, and platform layers.
- Collaborate with hardware, architecture, platform, validation, security, and program teams to define requirements and resolve issues.
- Develop scalable, modular, maintainable firmware architectures supporting future product evolution.
- Implement and debug embedded firmware using C, C++, and Python across RTL simulation, emulation, silicon bring-up, and platform validation.
- Enable new silicon capabilities and third-party components within the firmware stack.
- Establish engineering discipline via design/code reviews, CI, automation, and issue tracking.
- Support HW/FW co-design and co-validation flows, including test infrastructure and debug tools.
- Work with firmware interfaces such as PCIe, UART, I2C, SPI, USB, SATA, UFS, eMMC and others.
- Improve engineering productivity through modern development practices and AI-assisted engineering tools.
Requirements
Core technical skills and tools required for the role.
- Proficiency in C programming and hands-on experience with BIOS, Coreboot, or embedded firmware development.
- Strong understanding of modern processor and computer systems architecture and low-level firmware that interfaces with hardware.
- Experience with UEFI, ACPI, and modular firmware/software design within the Intel Architecture domain.
- Familiarity with professional source code management systems such as GitHub.
- Practical experience with debugging and trace tools, including Intel x86 ITP and CCA debuggers.
- Proven ability to own complex system-level problems and work cross-functionally across teams and sites.
Nice-to-have:
- Knowledge of x86 processors and system software architecture.
- Experience with platform buses and interfaces: PCIe, UART, I2C, SPI, TCSS, USB, SATA, UFS, eMMC.
- Familiarity with patch submission workflows, bug reporting, and code review practices.
- Experience with automation frameworks, emulation, and silicon bring-up tooling.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field (common example: Bachelor's +4 years), or Master's degree in those fields (common example: Master's +3 years), or PhD. The posting allows advanced degrees and specifies experience ranges tied to degree level; equivalent practical experience is implied by the degree/experience combinations listed.
