Backend Compiler Engineer β€” New College Grad (2026)

Role Summary

Work on NVIDIA's GPU backend compiler to generate high-performance machine code for graphics and compute workloads. Join the Back End Compiler team responsible for code generation and performance for NVIDIA SIMT architectures.

Collaborate with compiler, hardware, and application teams to investigate issues, implement improvements, and support deep-learning and graphics use cases. Applications accepted until July 17, 2026.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include debugging and improving the compiler backend, working with cross-functional teams, and contributing to code generation and performance optimization.

  • Investigate compiler backend problems and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Implement fixes and optimizations in the backend code generation path.
  • Collaborate with global compiler, hardware, and application teams to resolve issues and coordinate changes.
  • Contribute to compiler features that support graphics and compute workloads.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and competencies.

  • Strong programming skills in C/C++.
  • Familiarity with LLVM code generation and compiler toolchains.
  • Good written and verbal communication; ability to follow software engineering best practices.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across engineering teams to diagnose and resolve complex problems.

Nice-to-have:

  • Hands-on experience with backend compiler design: instruction scheduling, software pipelining, register allocation, GlobalISel, TableGen, LLVM IR, and Machine IR (MIR).
  • Experience with GPU and parallel architectures, CUDA and/or PTX, or graphics APIs (OpenGL, DirectX, Vulkan).
  • Graduate coursework or specialization in compiler design and construction.

Education Requirements

Recent graduate with a Bachelor's or Masters degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience. Successful completion of an undergraduate Compiler Design course is expected; equivalent experience will be considered.
