Job Title

Backend Compiler Engineer

Role Summary

Work on NVIDIA's GPU compiler backend to generate high-performance machine code for graphics and compute workloads. The role sits on the GPU Software Compiler team and focuses on code generation, optimization, and cross-team collaboration with hardware and application groups.

Experience Level

Mid-level. The posting requests at least 2 years of compiler code generation experience.

Responsibilities

The role involves developing and improving the compiler backend and working with multiple internal teams to deliver robust, high-performance code generation.

  • Understand, modify, and improve an existing proprietary GPU compiler backend written in C++.
  • Design and implement new compiler passes and optimizations to improve code generation quality and robustness.
  • Collaborate with global compiler, hardware, and application teams to diagnose issues and deliver fixes.
  • Contribute to tooling, documentation, and maintainable software engineering practices for the compiler stack.
  • Support compiler features for both graphics (OpenGL, Vulkan, DirectX) and compute (CUDA, PTX, OpenCL).

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience required to perform the role.

  • 2+ years of compiler code generation experience (must-have).
  • Excellent hands-on C++ programming skills (must-have).
  • Strong software engineering practices: writing maintainable, robust code and good documentation (must-have).
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work independently and across distributed teams (must-have).
  • Nice-to-have: experience with LLVM code generation components such as instruction scheduling, software pipelining, register allocation, GlobalISel, TableGen, LLVM IR, and Machine IR.
  • Nice-to-have: experience developing CUDA, DirectX, OpenGL, or Vulkan applications.

Education Requirements

B.S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. M.S. or PhD with significant compiler-related work is preferred.
