ASIC/FPGA/Hardware Engineer
Role Summary
Early-career engineer on Battelle's Cyber Advanced Microsystem Solutions team in Columbus, OH. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to design, prototype, analyze, and validate embedded security hardware for government and industrial clients.
Primary responsibilities include digital/FPGA design, hardware validation, rapid prototyping, and documenting reproducible technical results.
Experience Level
Entry-level / Early career. Guidance: 0–6 years experience with a Bachelor's degree, 0–4 years with a Master's degree, or equivalent practical experience.
Responsibilities
Deliver technical contributions across ASIC, FPGA, and hardware tasks spanning design, validation, and prototyping.
- Assess security and reliability of electronic devices and systems.
- Perform digital circuit analysis across the design lifecycle (simulation, synthesis, layout, verification).
- Develop prototypes and software implementations to evaluate research concepts.
- Execute technical tasks with limited supervision while meeting schedule and budget constraints.
- Identify strengths and weaknesses of proposed solutions and present technical findings to stakeholders.
- Contribute to rapid prototyping and internal R&D efforts; document designs and processes for reproducibility.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, security eligibility, and practical experience to perform the role.
- Experience with integrated circuit design flow (simulation, synthesis, layout, fabrication).
- Experience in FPGA development flow, including RTL design and validation.
- Proficiency in VHDL, Verilog, or SystemVerilog.
- Familiarity with hardware validation and debugging methodologies and electronic test equipment.
- Experience with EDA tools (examples: Cadence, Synopsys, Xilinx Vivado).
- Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively in multi-disciplinary teams.
- US citizenship and eligibility for Top Secret clearance (required).
- Preferred: active Top Secret clearance with SCI eligibility; experience leading technical discussions, proposal generation, WBS creation, PCB design, hardware security, or applying machine learning to hardware.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field (0–6 years experience); or a Master's degree in a related field (0–4 years experience); or equivalent practical experience.
