Applications Engineer - Force Sensors
Role Summary
Integrate Semtech force-sensing products into customer devices across consumer, automotive and industrial markets. Work with mechanical, electrical, firmware and software teams to develop prototypes, support validation, and transition designs to mass production.
Support OEM customers through evaluation, debugging, and system-level verification; manage PCB vendors and produce technical documentation.
Experience Level
Mid-level — requires substantial hands-on experience; the posting requests 5+ years of relevant electronic design experience.
Responsibilities
Accountabilities include hands-on design, customer engagement, test, and documentation:
- Produce schematics, PCB layouts (Altium/Cadence/Siemens), Gerbers, BOMs and fabrication notes; manage PCB vendors and fabrication.
- Build and debug prototypes, test boards and sensor modules; perform hardware bring-up and failure analysis.
- Collaborate with R&D on sensor- and system-level test, characterization, and verification of new chips.
- Integrate firmware and support embedded system bring-up (I2C/SPI, ADCs, sensor signal processing).
- Provide multidisciplinary technical support to customers from concept through mass production, including evaluation kits and modules.
- Create technical documentation: datasheets, application notes, design guides and customer training materials.
- Collect customer feedback, liaise with marketing and R&D to influence product roadmap and improvements.
- Stay current with industry advancements and support occasional customer travel (domestic and international, up to ~10%).
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, tools and professional attributes.
- Minimum 5+ years professional experience in electronic design from prototype to production.
- Proficient with Altium, Cadence, or Siemens for schematic capture and PCB layout with multiple fabricated boards.
- Hands-on experience with analog / mixed-signal circuitry.
- Experience in one or more: ADCs, sensors, embedded system design, firmware development, sensor signal post-processing, I2C/SPI interfaces.
- Proficiency in at least one programming language: C/C++ or Python.
- Familiar with lab equipment: oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer, logic analyzer, DMM, soldering and related tools.
- Experience producing technical writing for electronic hardware and firmware.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Soft skills: self-motivated, detail-oriented, strong communicator, customer-focused team player, good time management.
Education Requirements
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field is required.
Desired Qualifications
Nice-to-have skills that strengthen candidacy.
- Algorithm development experience.
- Experience in the semiconductor or automotive industries.
- Familiarity with AI/ML tools (example: Claude).
