Analog Design Engineering Intern (Power Management)
Analog DevicesJob Title
Analog Design Engineering Intern (Power Management)
Role Summary
Internship position on the analog and power-management IP team in Edinburgh focused on low-power, high-efficiency switched-mode DC/DC converters and supporting analog building blocks. The intern will work with experienced analog, mixed-signal and power-management engineers on real IC development tasks.
This role offers hands-on exposure to transistor-level design, modelling, simulation, verification and potential silicon evaluation in a mixed-signal IC environment.
Experience Level
Entry-level internship for students currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate engineering programs (internship).
Responsibilities
Day-to-day work includes design, simulation, verification and collaboration across disciplines to develop power-management IP.
- Conduct architecture research and feasibility studies for low-power power-management functions.
- Contribute to design, simulation and verification of DC/DC converter IP (buck, boost, buck-boost).
- Design and analyze analog sub-circuits such as error amplifiers, comparators, references, oscillators, gate drivers and current-sensing circuits.
- Develop simulation testbenches and verify designs across process, voltage, temperature and load conditions.
- Analyze performance trade-offs: efficiency, quiescent current, transient response, output ripple, stability and area.
- Explore converter operating modes and control techniques to optimize efficiency across loads.
- Contribute to behavioural and system-level modelling for architecture and control-loop evaluation.
- Collaborate with layout engineers on physical implementation and layout-dependent effects.
- Participate in technical and design reviews and support integration of power-management IP into larger mixed-signal systems.
- Support laboratory evaluation and comparison of simulated versus measured silicon performance when appropriate.
Requirements
Must-have skills and attributes for the internship.
- Good understanding of fundamental analog electronics and circuit theory.
- Understanding of CMOS devices and basic transistor-level circuit operation.
- Familiarity with feedback systems, frequency response and stability.
- Basic understanding of power electronics and switching circuits.
- Some experience with circuit simulation or electronic design tools from university, personal or project work.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; good written and verbal communication.
- Enthusiasm for learning and working collaboratively within an engineering team.
- No travel required.
Nice-to-have:
- Familiarity with DC/DC converter architectures and control concepts (PWM/PFM, loop stability, transient response).
- Exposure to Cadence Virtuoso, Spectre, SIMPLIS, MATLAB/Simulink or similar tools.
- Experience with low-power circuit techniques and quiescent-current optimisation.
- Hands-on lab experience with oscilloscopes, power supplies, electronic loads and signal generators.
- Programming or scripting experience in Python, MATLAB or similar for modelling and data analysis.
Education Requirements
Currently pursuing a BEng, MEng, MSc or PhD in Electronic/Electrical Engineering, Microelectronics or a closely related discipline.
