AI Switch Systems Design Engineer
Advanced Micro DevicesJob Title
AI Switch Systems Design Engineer
Role Summary
Hands-on systems design engineer responsible for bring-up and system validation of scale-up Ethernet switches used in high-density AI GPU racks. Own execution from initial power-on through full system qualification and work closely with hardware, firmware, and software teams to deliver production-ready platforms.
Experience Level
Mid-level (no explicit years of experience specified).
Responsibilities
Primary technical responsibilities and ownership areas:
- Lead system bring-up and validation of AI scale-up switches from initial power-on to system qualification.
- Perform high-speed SerDes and link bring-up: configure and validate AN/LT, tune TX equalization, and characterize SI for 200G/400G/800G interfaces.
- Execute link qualification testing (PRBS, Snake/loopback traffic, FEC analysis) and validate BER at scale.
- Use tools (e.g., LinkCAT, Broadcom SDK) to characterize port performance and diagnose link failures across large port counts.
- Integrate and validate server management infrastructure (BMC/IPMI, Redfish, out-of-band workflows) for automated bring-up and monitoring.
- Develop and maintain bring-up scripts and test automation in Python to increase validation coverage.
- Debug cross-layer system failures (signal integrity, firmware crashes, management-plane anomalies) and drive issues to root cause.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to reproduce failures, document findings, verify fixes, and maintain bring-up documentation and test reports.
Requirements
Must-have skills and notable preferred strengths.
- Must-have: Hands-on experience in hardware bring-up, platform validation, or high-speed networking silicon characterization.
- Must-have: Practical experience with high-speed Ethernet standards and SerDes technologies (AN/LT, RS-FEC/KP4-FEC, PAM4) and link qualification (PRBS, BER measurement, eye analysis).
- Must-have: Strong debugging skills across hardware (oscilloscope, protocol analyzer), firmware logs, and software traces.
- Must-have: Proficiency in Python for test automation, log parsing, and data analysis.
- Must-have: Ability to read schematics and PCB layouts to correlate SI observations with hardware design; experience with server management protocols (IPMI, Redfish/OpenBMC, KCS, IPMB, PLDM).
- Nice-to-have: Experience with Broadcom switch ASICs (Tomahawk/TH6 series), Broadcom SDK/DAPI, LinkCAT or equivalent PHY/link tools, and prior work on high-density switch/router or AI/ML fabric platforms.
- Location & eligibility: Onsite in Secaucus, NJ (also listed Austin, TX); this role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field strongly preferred.
