Job Title
AI Research Scientist, SysML
Role Summary
Join Reality Labs Silicon to develop algorithms, models, and system-level solutions that enable compute- and power-efficient training and on-device inference of vision and language models for AR/VR and edge devices. The role spans algorithm development, hardware-aware model optimization, and co-design with hardware and software teams.
Experience Level
Mid-level. Candidates typically hold advanced research experience; the posting expects doctoral-level expertise or equivalent practical experience.
Responsibilities
Core responsibilities include research, prototyping, and evaluation across models, compilers, and accelerator/hardware designs.
- Identify and solve multi-discipline ML acceleration problems spanning algorithms, network design, hardware architecture, and AR/VR use cases.
- Collaborate across hardware and software teams to drive co-design and integration of algorithmic and architectural improvements.
- Invent and prototype ML accelerator and system architecture solutions and integrate software to leverage those enhancements.
- Develop model compression and scalability techniques (numerics, pruning, distillation, etc.) for efficient deployment.
- Optimize models for hardware accelerators to meet latency, power, and real-time constraints.
- Define use cases and build benchmarks and methodology to evaluate alternatives.
- Communicate trade-offs and influence partners through data-driven analysis.
- Publish and present research; contribute to patents and peer-reviewed publications.
Requirements
Must-have skills and experience for successful performance in this role. Preferred items are listed separately.
- Proven experience developing AI-system infrastructure, AI algorithms, or AI hardware acceleration using C/C++ or Python.
- Experience working across algorithm, compiler, and hardware stacks to optimize models for accelerators.
- Hands-on experience with model optimization techniques (quantization, pruning, distillation) and hardware-aware model design.
- Ability to evaluate trade-offs in performance, power, and latency and recommend practical solutions.
- Strong cross-functional communication and collaboration skills.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience training or deploying large-scale CV models and/or LLMs.
- Familiarity with PyTorch, TensorFlow, or similar ML frameworks.
- Experience with ML compilers or optimizing compilers for efficient accelerator deployment.
- Track record of research impact (publications, patents, grants) or widely used open-source contributions.
- Experience implementing responsible AI practices (risk assessment, bias mitigation, quality reviews).
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience; PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent experience is indicated/expected for this role. The posting explicitly allows equivalent practical experience in lieu of formal degrees.
