Job Title

AI Research Engineer/Scientist

Role Summary

Join Intel's Corporate Technology Office to develop electro-optical architectures and co-design electronic-photonic integrated circuits for next-generation datacenter and AI interconnects. The role focuses on R&D for scalable electro-photonic systems, device optimization, and system-level simulation.

Experience Level

Mid-level: typically 3+ years of relevant industry experience; Ph.D. preferred (see Education Requirements).

Responsibilities

Deliver electro-optical IC architectures, simulations, and mixed-signal designs to meet performance targets for optical interconnects.

  • Define architectures and designs for next-generation optical interconnects to meet specifications and performance targets.
  • Optimize integrated electro-optical circuit components and validate designs through simulation.
  • Design digital and mixed-signal accelerators to support state-of-the-art algorithms.
  • Develop simulation methodologies and end-to-end frameworks that bridge electronics, photonics, and packaging.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and lead technical project development.
  • Advise on post-silicon test plans and support laboratory characterization.
  • Document designs with review materials and detailed design descriptions; communicate results clearly.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and demonstrated R&D experience; preferred skills listed separately.

  • Proven track record of peer-reviewed publications and/or patents in simulation, design, optimization, or implementation of heterogeneously integrated electro-optical devices and electronic-photonic ICs.
  • At least 3 years of experience in digital and mixed-signal design flows with successful tapeouts.
  • Experience developing electro-optical architectures and scalable electro-photonic system simulations.
  • Experience designing digital and mixed-signal accelerators and high-speed analog circuitry.
  • Ability to develop and validate test plans and perform post-silicon characterization.
  • Clear oral and written communication skills and ability to produce detailed design documentation.

Preferred:

  • Proficiency with electronic and photonic IC design CAD tools.
  • Experience with hardware description languages (Verilog, Verilog-A) and programming languages (C/C++, Python).
  • Expertise in design and optimization of active and passive optoelectronic modulators.
  • Familiarity with 2.5D/3D packaging and integration techniques and switch-fabric architectures.
  • Hands-on laboratory testing and characterization experience, including TIAs and modulator drivers.
  • Proven experience building end-to-end simulation frameworks across electronics, photonics, and packaging.

Education Requirements

Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Optics, or Optical Engineering is required.
