AI and Compiler Engineering Graduate Intern
Role Summary
Work on compiler research and development to optimize AI/ML models and runtimes for Intel CPU and GPU platforms. The role supports hardware-software co-design by collecting and analyzing model performance data and evaluating optimization impact on architecture and software.
You'll collaborate with compiler and systems engineers, using tools such as LLVM, SYCL, and CUDA to improve performance, scalability, and portability for heterogeneous compute.
Experience Level
Entry-level internship. Typical candidates are current graduate students or recent graduates; the posting cites 2–3 years of hands-on domain experience via internships, academic projects, or coursework as guidance.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include conducting performance experiments, implementing and evaluating compiler/runtimes optimizations, and communicating results to engineering teams.
- Collect and analyze AI model performance data on Intel CPUs and GPUs.
- Design, implement, and test compiler or runtime optimizations for AI/ML workloads.
- Evaluate how software optimizations affect hardware design and provide feedback to architecture teams.
- Work with LLVM, SYCL, CUDA and other tooling to prototype and validate changes.
- Run performance experiments, profile workloads, and document findings.
- Debug performance and correctness issues across software and hardware stacks.
- Collaborate with engineers on integration and verification of features across compilers and runtimes.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and relevant experience; preferred items listed separately.
- Proficiency in C/C++ and understanding of data structures and algorithms.
- Familiarity with compiler construction concepts from coursework or projects (the specific degree requirements are listed under Education Requirements).
- Knowledge of modern CPU/GPU architecture and memory systems.
- Experience with accelerated computing and parallel programming models such as OpenMP, CUDA, or SYCL.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience building compilers or compiler components using the LLVM framework.
- Experience analyzing and optimizing AI models and runtimes for heterogeneous architectures.
- Kernel programming experience and AI model optimization using PyTorch for large language models.
- Familiarity with Intel architecture and GPU performance tracking and analysis.
- Strong debugging skills and ability to propose practical solutions.
Education Requirements
Pursuing or holding a Master’s or higher in Computer Science (preferred), Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related technical field. The posting accepts domain experience gained via internships, academic projects, coursework, or hands-on training as relevant preparation for the role.
