Arm Physical Design Engineer Jobs
Arm does not ship its own chips. Its physical design teams harden the Cortex and Neoverse CPU cores into silicon-proven layouts that hundreds of licensees drop into their own SoCs. That one fact changes the job in ways that matter.
The core work is familiar: place and route, clock tree synthesis, timing closure, power analysis, and sign-off on Cortex-A, Cortex-M, and Neoverse cores. Alongside the cores, Arm ships the Artisan physical IP: standard cell libraries, SRAM compilers, and I/O libraries. You will live in Cadence Innovus or Synopsys ICC2 with heavy static timing analysis, and you port the same core across TSMC N5, N3, and N2, Samsung SF3, and Intel 18A.
Because a licensee could integrate your macro in almost any context, the implementation has to hold timing across a wide spread of PVT corners and be documented well enough for an outside team to reuse without hand-holding. That cross-process, cross-customer portability is the part of Arm PD you will not find at a company building a single product.
Cambridge is Arm's headquarters and its main PD site, with large teams in Austin, Bengaluru, and Sophia Antipolis. Bengaluru runs sizable physical design and verification groups, and India roles show up on SemiDesignJobs next to the UK and US openings. Wherever you sit, you touch a wider range of foundry process technologies than almost any other chip employer.
Pay tracks the advanced-node skill set. UK senior physical design roles typically run Β£70K to Β£110K base, while US roles in Austin or San Jose land closer to $160K to $230K base before bonus and equity. The salary guide has fuller ranges by level.

FAQ
What is unique about physical design at Arm compared to other chip companies
Arm physical design engineers create IP that is licensed to hundreds of companies and used across thousands of chip designs. Implementations have to be portable, hold timing across a wide range of PVT corners, and be documented thoroughly for external integration by licensees.
What process nodes does Arm implement its CPU IP on
Arm implements its flagship Cortex-A and Neoverse cores on TSMC N5, N3, and N2, plus Samsung SF4 and SF3. Physical design engineers on leading-edge cores get hands-on experience with the most advanced process nodes in production.
Does Arm hire physical design engineers in India
Yes. Arm's Bengaluru office is one of its largest design centers globally, with significant physical design and verification teams. India-based roles are listed on SemiDesignJobs alongside Arm's UK and US openings.
