Job Title

Yield & Quality Engineer – UHP and CW Laser / Photonics Semiconductor

Role Summary

Lumentum is hiring a Yield & Quality Engineer to improve manufacturing yield, device performance, and product reliability for ultra-high-power (UHP) and continuous-wave (CW) semiconductor laser chip fabrication. The role partners with R&D, process engineering, manufacturing, test, reliability, quality, and suppliers to drive data-driven process improvements and resolve complex quality issues.

Experience Level

Senior-level. Typical experience ranges per education path: Ph.D. +5 years, M.S. +8 years, B.S. +10 years (see Education Requirements for details).

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities focus on yield improvement, root-cause analysis, and cross-functional problem solving.

  • Drive yield improvement for wafer and chip fabrication through analysis of manufacturing, process, test, and device-performance data.
  • Analyze large datasets to identify yield limiters, process excursions, and systematic failure signatures.
  • Lead root-cause investigations for manufacturing and customer quality issues using structured problem-solving methodologies.
  • Design and execute DOE with process engineering and R&D to validate process improvements.
  • Establish and monitor yield, process, and quality metrics to detect abnormal trends and excursions.
  • Lead or contribute to 8D, CAPA, FMEA, SPC, and other quality-improvement activities.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with device engineering, wafer fabrication, chip processing, test, reliability, quality, and suppliers.
  • Communicate technical findings and recommendations clearly to manufacturing, engineering teams, and management.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience; nice-to-have items indicated where applicable.

  • Strong understanding of semiconductor device physics, preferably semiconductor lasers, high-power laser diodes, or related optoelectronic devices.
  • Experience in UHP/high-power laser chip fabrication or relevant experience in photonics, optoelectronics, III-V semiconductors, or semiconductor manufacturing.
  • Proven yield engineering and data-mining experience; ability to translate manufacturing and test data into actionable improvements.
  • Solid knowledge of statistical and engineering methods such as SPC, DOE, correlation/regression analysis.
  • Experience investigating quality, reliability, manufacturing, or customer-return issues and driving from containment through verified corrective action.
  • Familiarity with quality and problem-solving methodologies: 8D, CAPA, FMEA, SPC.
  • Experience with analytical/data-mining tools such as JMP, Python, SQL, or equivalent (highly desirable).
  • Strong technical communication and structured problem-solving skills; ability to present findings to technical and management audiences.

Education Requirements

Degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a closely related technical discipline. Required combinations: Ph.D. with 5+ years relevant industry experience; M.S. with 8+ years relevant industry experience; B.S. with 10+ years relevant industry experience. Relevant experience preferably includes semiconductor lasers, photonics, optoelectronics, or compound-semiconductor fabrication.
