Job Title
WLA Yield Defect Metrology Engineer
Role Summary
Responsible for improving manufacturing yield for advanced logic nodes by identifying defect modes and root causes, developing metrology and data-analysis solutions, and driving process and equipment improvements. The role works within Foundry Technology Manufacturing and collaborates with cross-functional teams across design, test, and process integration.
Experience Level
Senior. Typical experience guidance: approximately 4–8+ years of relevant industry experience (exact expectation varies with education level).
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities focus on defect understanding, yield modeling, and implementing corrective actions to improve product integrity and yield.
- Identify root-cause yield limiters across the technology node lifecycle and recommend corrective actions.
- Perform statistical analysis and build visualizations to guide process-development roadmaps and yield milestones.
- Develop systems to consolidate and analyze large, diverse data sources for defect-mode understanding and yield modeling.
- Organize and interpret fab process, defect, and electrical data; detect anomalies and drive process changes.
- Apply statistics, machine learning, and coding to extract insights from structured and unstructured data.
- Translate experimental and manufacturing data into actionable yield-improvement strategies using product and test knowledge.
- Analyze manufacturability with respect to process and product design and resolve yield issues prior to manufacturing ramp.
- Support new product introductions and design-technology co-optimization efforts.
- Perform fault isolation and failure analysis to determine root causes and improve measurement recipes and equipment/process capability.
- Develop and implement high-volume data-analysis tools, algorithms, and methodologies for yield improvement.
Requirements
Core technical experience and skills required; education details are listed separately under Education Requirements.
- Hands-on experience with metrology and defect inspection equipment.
- Defect detection, defect-density analysis, and demonstrated yield-improvement execution.
- Failure mode analysis and process integration experience, including fault isolation techniques.
- Strong statistics, data analytics, and coding skills for large datasets.
- Experience developing high-volume data analysis tools and automation for manufacturing use.
- Ability to collaborate across cross-functional teams and communicate technical findings effectively.
- Nice-to-have: machine learning techniques, semiconductor manufacturing/yield-development background, and experience driving measurement-recipe or equipment improvements.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or another STEM-related field with 8+ years of relevant experience; OR a Master’s degree in one of those fields with 6+ years of relevant experience; OR a PhD in one of those fields with 4+ years of relevant experience.
