Wireless Communication Systems Engineer
Blue OriginJob Title
Wireless Communication Systems Engineer
Role Summary
Develop and analyze wireless communication algorithms and system architectures for a high-throughput satellite communications platform (TeraWave). Work across modem PHY/MAC, digital signal processing, RF, ASIC, FPGA, and software teams to move algorithms from concept through pre-silicon verification and post-silicon validation.
Position is onsite at one of several U.S. engineering locations (Bay Area/Cupertino, San Diego, Austin, or Kent, WA); limited travel (~20%) and relocation assistance are provided.
Experience Level
Mid-level - requires approximately 3+ years of relevant industry experience in wireless communication systems, modem development, or digital signal processing.
Responsibilities
Key duties include algorithm development, modeling, and cross-discipline verification:
- Develop and model modem PHY/MAC, radio DSP, beamforming, and packet-processing algorithms for custom silicon.
- Create end-to-end and link-level system models to evaluate performance and architecture tradeoffs.
- Model channel and RF impairments (noise, interference, Doppler, phase noise, nonlinearities, frequency/timing offsets).
- Design and evaluate synchronization, channel estimation, equalization, modulation/demodulation, coding, and link adaptation algorithms.
- Analyze implementation tradeoffs: complexity, latency, memory, bandwidth, power, and fixed-point requirements.
- Translate algorithm requirements into FPGA/ASIC specifications and support hardware implementation and pre-silicon verification.
- Collaborate with RFIC, beamforming, ASIC, software, and test teams to ensure end-to-end performance.
- Develop reference models in MATLAB, Python, C/C++, SystemC or similar and support FPGA prototyping and silicon bring-up.
- Document algorithms, models, interfaces, requirements, and verification results.
Requirements
Must-have skills, technologies, and constraints:
- 3+ years of experience in wireless communication systems, modem development, or digital signal processing.
- Strong fundamentals in digital communications and signal processing.
- Hands-on experience with algorithms such as OFDM, QPSK/QAM, synchronization, channel estimation, equalization, FEC, and link adaptation.
- Experience developing communication/system models in MATLAB, Python, C/C++, SystemC, or similar tools.
- Familiarity with RF impairments and their impact on system performance.
- Experience supporting FPGA prototyping, ASIC pre-silicon verification, or post-silicon validation.
- Ability to work collaboratively across ASIC, RFIC, FPGA, software, and test teams; strong communication and documentation skills.
- Legal eligibility: must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, U.S. permanent resident (Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted as a refugee or granted asylum.
Education Requirements
Minimum: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Communications Engineering, or a related technical discipline. Preferred: Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Communications Engineering, or a related field. (Degrees in related technical fields or equivalent practical experience implied by job context.)
