USB Software Applications Engineer, Senior
QualcommJob Title
USB Software Applications Engineer, Senior
Role Summary
Provide technical customer-facing engineering support for design, integration, validation, optimization, and commercialization of Qualcomm-based products with a focus on USB and system-level issues across Linux, Android, Windows, and UEFI.
Work closely with OEM/ODM partners and internal platform, firmware, driver, and validation teams to enable USB features, resolve cross-layer issues, and support product certification and launches.
Experience Level
Senior - the posting expects experienced engineers; typical background includes multiple years of software/embedded/platform integration, validation, or customer-engineering experience (posting references 3+ years in relevant roles).
Responsibilities
Provide customer engineering and platform support across hardware, firmware, drivers, and OS layers. Key responsibilities include:
- Work directly with OEM/ODM customers to integrate, validate, test, and commercialize products using Qualcomm platforms.
- Enable and validate USB host/device/dual-role functionality (USB2/USB3/USB4, USB Type-C) and peripheral interoperability.
- Reproduce customer issues, perform root-cause analysis, recommend fixes or workarounds, and drive issues to closure across regions and time zones.
- Debug drivers, firmware, bootloaders, and OS stacks on Linux, Android, and Windows using tools such as JTAG, GDB, logs, tracing, and crash dumps.
- Tune PHYs, validate links, characterize throughput and electrical behavior, and use protocol analyzers (e.g., LeCroy) for protocol-level investigation.
- Correlate logs, traces, captures, and hardware measurements to isolate causes and produce validated patches, reports, and validation plans.
- Prepare technical documentation and presentations for customers and collaborate with cross-functional teams to meet commercialization milestones.
Requirements
Must-have skills and experience:
- Several years of experience in software, embedded systems, platform integration, validation, or customer engineering (posting cites 3+ years in many sections).
- Strong C/C++ skills; experience with scripting or other languages such as Python or Java.
- Experience developing or debugging Linux/Android software in user-space and/or kernel-space; system-level debugging with JTAG, GDB, tracing tools, and crash-analysis utilities.
- Experience with USB host/device/dual-role functionality and interoperability testing across OS and peripheral ecosystems.
- Protocol analysis experience using hardware protocol analyzers and familiarity with throughput tuning and system-level performance optimization.
- Customer-facing communication skills and ability to manage priorities across global teams and time zones.
Nice-to-have:
- USB4 certification experience; USB2/USB3 Gen2 PHY tuning and electrical validation.
- UEFI/BIOS USB driver workflow, Windows driver development, or experience with Qualcomm platforms and BSPs.
- Familiarity with PCIe, I2C, SPI, UART, PMICs, memory/storage interactions, ARM TrustZone, or related platform technologies.
Education Requirements
Posting requests a degree in Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field. It lists Bachelor's as the baseline with Master's preferred and PhD acceptable; the posting also allows equivalent combinations of education and experience (examples in the posting include Bachelor's + 2 years, Master's + 1 year, or PhD).
