Trainee - Electronic Design Automation in Microelectronics

Role Summary

Join GlobalFoundries Sofia as a part-time trainee within the Electronic Design Automation (EDA) team. The role introduces students to modern EDA tools and workflows used to develop and verify design kits for CMOS, RFCMOS and BiCMOS processes.

Position is 20 hours/week aligned with university schedule, lasts 1–1.5 years, and includes a monthly scholarship. Work is onsite in Sofia and focused on practical training toward CAD engineer responsibilities.

Experience Level

Entry-level / Student trainee. Intended for active university students; no specific professional years-of-experience required.

Responsibilities

Work under EDA engineers to learn and support kit development and verification. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Learn and use EDA tools and CAD flows for design-kit development and verification.
  • Assist in setup and validation of device libraries, PDK components, and verification testbenches.
  • Write and maintain scripts to automate CAD tasks and data processing.
  • Run circuit simulations and analyze results under supervision.
  • Document procedures, test results and contribute to team knowledge base.
  • Collaborate with design and technology teams on interoperability and quality checks.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and knowledge for successful participation in the trainee program:

  • Good knowledge of electronic devices and semiconductor theory.
  • Basic programming experience in one or more languages (examples: C/C++, Perl, Python, TCL).
  • Ability to learn CAD tools and follow engineering processes; attention to detail.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with CAD systems (Cadence IC/OrCAD, Protel or similar).
  • Familiarity with circuit simulators (PSpice or similar) or mathematical software (MATLAB, Mathematica).

Education Requirements

Active university student in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computer Engineering, Telecommunications, Automation, or an equivalent technical program. Equivalent practical experience acceptable where indicated.
