Systems Engineering Intern - MS/PhD

Role Summary

This internship supports systems engineering activities across analog and digital IC product development. The intern will help define product requirements, evaluate system and silicon tradeoffs, and contribute to roadmaps and specifications used by IC design and product teams.

Work areas include system-level analysis, hardware/software evaluation, and cross-functional collaboration with customers, applications, design, test, and product engineering teams.

Experience Level

Entry-level (Internship). Role is intended for current MS or PhD students; no specific professional experience required.

Responsibilities

Typical responsibilities include:

  • Contribute to development of analog and digital chips and system products from concept through production.
  • Participate in IC design cycles and system-design activities, including writing and reviewing specifications.
  • Interface with business units and customers to gather requirements and help define product roadmaps.
  • Assess and negotiate tradeoffs between system requirements, cost, manufacturability, and performance with design teams.
  • Evaluate silicon and system-level solutions (hardware and software) and document findings.
  • Develop algorithms and system reference models; assist with signal-processing and validation tasks.
  • Support schematic review, PCB layout discussions, circuit debugging, and system testing.
  • Provide documentation for each development lifecycle step and assist with troubleshooting.
  • Analyze end-equipment (automotive, industrial, consumer, computing) to identify trends and opportunities.

Requirements

See Education Requirements for enrollment and GPA prerequisites. Preferred and relevant skills:

  • Fundamentals of analog electronics: feedback systems, filters, MOSFET/BJT behavior, frequency-domain analysis.
  • Structured or object-oriented programming (C, C++); experience with Matlab or similar signal-processing tools.
  • Experience or understanding of system design, IC design specifications, and developing system reference models.
  • Familiarity with schematic design, PCB layout, circuit debugging, and system-level testing.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to work with diverse stakeholders.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills, ability to simplify complex problems and work in cross-functional teams.
  • Self-motivated, takes initiative, and manages time to meet project milestones.

Education Requirements

Currently pursuing a graduate degree (MS or PhD) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or a related technical field. The posting also lists a Bachelor's degree level in job information. Minimum cumulative GPA: 3.0/4.0.
