System Software Engineer
MatXJob Title
System Software Engineer
Role Summary
As a System Software Engineer on the System Software Team you will design and implement low-level system software (Linux device drivers, low-level libraries, daemons) to support MatX accelerator silicon and the host stack. You will work closely with architecture, silicon, firmware and hardware teams and participate in new chip bring-up and performance optimization.
This is a hybrid role requiring in-office presence in Mountain View three days per week (Tue–Thu).
Experience Level
Senior — 8+ years of relevant experience.
Responsibilities
Deliver performant, reliable system software across host and accelerator stack; collaborate with hardware and silicon teams.
- Design and implement Linux device drivers, low-level libraries, and system daemons.
- Develop unit tests and kernel-level tests for software components.
- Profile and optimize CPU and memory subsystem performance and OS overheads.
- Write debug and performance monitoring utilities and tools.
- Support new chip bring-up and debug hardware–software interactions with hardware engineers.
- Design system observability, resiliency, cluster management and failover algorithms.
- Productize system software across multiple CPU ISAs and operating system versions.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience.
- Strong hands-on Linux development, including kernel device drivers and low-level userspace libraries.
- Proficient in C and low-level systems programming.
- Ability to read and use hardware datasheets and register definitions to program devices.
- Experience with user-facing software bring-up on custom silicon and debugging complex hardware–software interactions.
- Deep knowledge of computer hardware, system architecture, and OS interfaces (threads, process and memory management).
- Experience with performance profiling and reducing OS/driver overheads.
- Experience designing cluster management and failover mechanisms to minimize downtime.
- Effective cross-functional collaboration with architects, hardware, firmware and test teams.
Education Requirements
BS or higher in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science (or equivalent degree). The posting also indicates a preference for substantial practical experience (the role was specified with 8+ years of experience).
