SW Engineering Intern

Role Summary

Develop, optimize and deploy AI/ML software for embedded NXP hardware (MCU, MPU, NPU). Work on neural network inference, model optimization and integration into the device software stack.

You will work with AI/ML engineers to prototype, test and maintain code for deploying neural networks on constrained devices and contribute to the software stack used for NXP NPUs.

Experience Level

Entry-level internship suitable for students or recent graduates. No specific years of prior professional experience required.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include design, implementation and validation of embedded ML software and optimizations.

• Design, develop, test and optimize AI/ML software for embedded hardware.
• Investigate and prototype new AI/ML techniques and model optimization methods.
• Deploy and maintain neural network inference code on MCUs, MPUs and NPUs using inference runtimes.
• Follow software quality standards and best practices; write and maintain tests.
• Collaborate with engineers and technical leads to integrate models into the product software stack.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and abilities:

• Proficient in Python.
• Experience with C and C++.
• Basic understanding of embedded systems and constraints.
• Basic knowledge of machine learning concepts (neural networks, training, inference).
• Interest in model optimization techniques (e.g., PTQ, QAT).
• Experience with deep learning frameworks (TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch) and runtimes (TFLite, ONNX Runtime, Executorch).
• Familiarity with common NN architectures (ResNet, YOLO, Vision Transformers).
• Fluency in English (written and spoken).

Nice-to-have:

• Linux development experience.
• Deeper knowledge of ML operators and layers (CNN, RNN, LSTM, Conv2D, pooling, activations).
• Familiarity with advanced model optimization algorithms (e.g., GPTQ, SmoothQuant, pruning) and evaluation frameworks for vision and generative models.
