Job Title

Substrates Quality and Reliability Engineer

Role Summary

Engineer responsible for quality and reliability of substrate materials and related supply-chain processes across manufacturing and suppliers. Works with suppliers, procurement and internal teams to qualify materials, perform reliability testing, investigate failures, and implement corrective actions to meet quality, yield, and production requirements.

Experience Level

Mid-level. Experience requirement varies by degree: Bachelor's +5 years, Master's +3 years, PhD +1 year (see Education Requirements).

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include qualification, supplier management, testing, and continuous improvement.

  • Develop and maintain quality management systems: audits, process control, change control, metrologies.
  • Apply quality and reliability principles to solve issues with equipment, materials, services, and manufacturing.
  • Plan and perform reliability testing, risk assessments, material disposition, and root cause analysis; implement corrective actions.
  • Define and develop next-generation quality and reliability methodologies for supply chain and manufacturing.
  • Benchmark industry technology and define future material and test requirements.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and procurement to define manufacturing process flows that meet quality, cost, yield, and production targets.
  • Assess supplier quality capability, develop risk mitigation plans, and lead supplier quality audits.
  • Visit vendor facilities to evaluate manufacturing environments, procedures, and compliance to standards.
  • Provide technical guidance to suppliers to reduce defect rates and maintain supplier quality reports.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience; preferred items listed separately.

  • Hands-on experience characterizing and analyzing physical, mechanical, and dimensional properties of materials used in assembly manufacturing, with emphasis on substrates.
  • Experience with reliability testing methods and interpreting test results.
  • Proven root cause analysis and corrective/preventive action implementation.
  • Experience performing supplier quality assessments, audits, and developing risk mitigation plans.
  • Familiarity with quality management systems, process control, change control, and metrology practices.
  • Ability to collaborate across procurement, suppliers, and internal stakeholders to resolve material or process issues.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to produce detailed supplier quality reports.

Preferred:

  • Proven ability to work independently within a matrixed organization and to influence stakeholders across the materials ecosystem.

Education Requirements

One of the following: Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics or a related engineering/physical sciences discipline plus minimum 5 years' relevant experience; OR Master's degree in a relevant engineering/physical sciences discipline plus minimum 3 years' relevant experience; OR PhD in a relevant engineering/physical sciences discipline plus minimum 1 year' relevant experience.
