Staff Software Development Engineer - Rust, Compilers, and GPU Systems
Role Summary
Develop next-generation GPU systems software with Rust across compilers, runtimes, low-level GPU software, firmware, and developer tooling. The role establishes how Rust is used in performance-sensitive, high-trust parts of the GPU stack and influences both short-term implementations and long-term architecture.
This is a technical leadership position focused on correctness, safety, and hardware-software co-design across abstraction layers.

Responsibilities
Deliver production-quality Rust and compiler components, define interfaces and practices, and collaborate across architecture, firmware, runtime, and validation teams.
- Lead design and implementation of Rust components for low-level, performance-sensitive GPU systems.
- Integrate Rust into toolchains, libraries, diagnostics, testing, and deployment practices.
- Design compiler pipelines involving rustc, MIR, IRs, MLIR dialects, LLVM IR, and AMDGPU code generation.
- Build analyses, transformations, legalization passes, and target-specific lowering for GPU execution models and memory spaces.
- Define typed, auditable interfaces across compiler, host runtime, device code, firmware, and hardware boundaries.
- Work on ABI definition and validation, calling conventions, linker/loader behavior, ELF and code-object metadata, and source-to-binary identity.
- Develop or improve bare-metal and no_std Rust components requiring explicit state and predictable hardware effects.
- Use testing, fuzzing, property-based testing, differential execution, executable models, and hardware validation to find semantic gaps and prevent regressions.
- Apply program analysis or formal methods where they provide meaningful assurance.
- Write design documents, lead technical reviews, mentor engineers, and evaluate emerging compiler and verification technologies.

- Must-have: Strong production Rust experience (ownership/borrowing, lifetimes, traits, error handling, concurrency, FFI) and designing safe abstractions over unsafe code.
- Must-have: Strong C/C++ systems programming skills and experience with mixed-language codebases.
- Must-have: Deep experience in compiler or systems engineering and ability to work across abstraction layers (source semantics, IRs, codegen, runtimes, firmware, hardware interfaces).
- Must-have: Strong judgment about correctness boundaries (memory safety, concurrency, ABI compatibility, ordering, device behavior).
- Must-have: Ability to partner across compiler, runtime, firmware, architecture, validation, security, and performance teams and to communicate technical tradeoffs.
- Must-have: Authorization to work in the United States; this role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
- Nice-to-have: Experience with rustc internals, MIR, custom codegen backends, procedural macros, or Rust toolchain infrastructure.
- Nice-to-have: Experience with LLVM, MLIR, GCC, designing IRs, analyses, optimization passes, and target-specific code generation.
- Nice-to-have: GPU-specific experience (AMDGPU, RDNA, CDNA, ROCm, HIP), GPU runtimes, drivers, firmware, or hardware-software co-design.
- Nice-to-have: Experience with formal methods, symbolic execution, model checking, verification tools, and advanced validation techniques (fuzzing, differential testing).
- Nice-to-have: Technical leadership experience: setting direction, mentoring, and resolving ambiguous cross-layer problems.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent industry experience. Research publications and advanced degrees are welcome but not required.
