Job Title

Staff Software Development Engineer - Rust, Compilers, and GPU Systems

Role Summary

Design and implement production-quality Rust systems and compiler infrastructure for AMD GPU software, spanning compilers, runtimes, low-level GPU software, firmware, and developer tooling. Work across abstraction layers to improve safety, correctness, and performance of hardware-software interfaces.

Experience Level

Senior (Staff level). The posting does not specify a required number of years of experience.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include leading design and implementation, defining interfaces, and improving validation and deployment practices for Rust-based GPU systems.

  • Lead design and implementation of Rust components for low-level, performance-sensitive GPU systems.
  • Integrate Rust into the GPU software stack: toolchain, libraries, diagnostics, testing, and deployment practices.
  • Design compiler pipelines involving rustc, MIR, MLIR/IR, LLVM IR, and AMDGPU code generation.
  • Develop analyses, transformations, legalization passes, and target-specific lowering for GPU execution models and memory spaces.
  • Define and validate typed, auditable interfaces across compiler, runtime, firmware, and hardware boundaries.
  • Work on ABI, calling conventions, linker/loader behavior, ELF and code-object metadata, and source-to-binary identity.
  • Develop or improve bare-metal and no_std Rust components with predictable hardware effects.
  • Use testing, fuzzing, differential testing, property-based testing, executable models, and hardware validation to prevent regressions.
  • Apply program analysis or formal methods where they add assurance; document trusted boundaries and evidence.
  • Collaborate with architecture, compiler, runtime, firmware, validation, security, and performance teams; write design documents and mentor engineers.

Requirements

Must-have skills are focused on production Rust and low-level systems reasoning; preferred skills increase effectiveness across compiler and GPU stacks.

  • Must-have: Strong production Rust experience (ownership, borrowing, lifetimes, traits, generics, concurrency, FFI) and proven systems-programming ability in C/C++ or equivalent.
  • Must-have: Ability to reason about correctness across concurrency, ordering, ABI compatibility, and compiler transformations.
  • Must-have: Experience designing and executing testing/validation strategies (fuzzing, differential testing, property-based testing, hardware validation).
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with rustc internals, MIR, custom codegen backends, or other Rust toolchain infrastructure.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with LLVM, MLIR, GCC, IR design, optimization passes, instruction selection, or target-specific code generation.
  • Nice-to-have: Knowledge of linkers/loaders, ELF/object formats, code-object metadata, DWARF, or binary rewriting.
  • Nice-to-have: Familiarity with GPU execution models, AMDGPU/GCN/RDNA/CDNA, ROCm, HIP, or AMDGPU LLVM backend and GPU runtimes/drivers/firmware.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with program analysis, symbolic execution, model checking, SMT solvers, or formal verification tools and executable specifications.
  • Nice-to-have: Hardware-software co-design experience and technical leadership experience (mentoring, cross-team influence, design reviews).

Education Requirements

Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field is listed as preferred; equivalent industry experience is explicitly acceptable. Research publications and advanced degrees are welcome but not required.
