Staff / Senior Engineer – Firmware Development
Micron TechnologyJob Title
Staff / Senior Engineer – Firmware Development
Role Summary
Join the firmware team supporting SSD security functionality and customer integrations. This technical role focuses on troubleshooting security firmware, delivering targeted fixes, and enabling customers to integrate and validate security features on storage products.
The role interfaces directly with customers, cross-functional product and quality teams, and contributes technical documentation and remediation for security incidents and audits.
Experience Level
Senior-level. Typical guidance: 5+ years of relevant engineering experience working with embedded firmware, storage, or security domains.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include customer-facing escalation, firmware debug, and security feature delivery:
- Act as primary technical escalation point for security firmware issues on SSD products and drive issues to closure within committed response times.
- Guide customers through configuration, integration, and validation of SSD security features (e.g., Opal/SSC, ATA/NVMe security, secure boot, signed firmware update, sanitize/cryptographic erase).
- Reproduce and debug customer, qualification, and field failures; analyze logs, traces, and bus captures; produce root-cause reports and corrective actions.
- Develop, unit test, and validate targeted security firmware fixes and customer-specific builds ensuring compliance with functional, performance, and reliability requirements.
- Assess reported vulnerabilities and support mitigation planning, remediation delivery, and customer disclosure.
- Support customer security audits, questionnaires, and certification activities (e.g., TCG compliance, FIPS, Common Criteria) and produce integration guides and application notes.
- Represent the company in technical engagements, translating firmware behavior and risk for engineering and non-engineering stakeholders.
- Maintain accurate issue records, knowledge-base content, and clear status reporting for management and partner teams.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, provide technical mentorship, and contribute to continuous improvement including responsible use of AI-assisted tools where appropriate.
Requirements
Key skills and experience required or strongly preferred. Degree requirements are summarized in the Education Requirements section below.
- Must-have: Customer-facing engineering experience (customer engineering support, field applications, sustaining/escalation management).
- Must-have: Embedded security domain knowledge: cryptography fundamentals (AES, RSA/ECC, SHA), key management, secure boot, secure firmware update.
- Must-have: Proficiency in low-level programming (C/C++); experience debugging firmware using debuggers, trace/log analysis, and protocol analyzers.
- Must-have: Experience with defect tracking, change control, and firmware release processes in a production environment.
- Must-have: Strong written and verbal communication; ability to manage multiple concurrent escalations under time pressure.
- Preferred / Nice-to-have: Familiarity with storage security standards (TCG Opal/Enterprise SSC, ATA/NVMe security), sanitize commands, and self-encrypting drives.
- Preferred: Experience with storage interfaces (PCIe/NVMe, SATA, SAS) and NAND or other non-volatile storage.
- Preferred: Programming experience in Rust and Python for test automation, log parsing, and debug tooling.
- Preferred: Prior experience in the storage industry, storage systems, or related technologies.
- Required behavior: Ability to apply baseline digital fluency and role-appropriate AI literacy to use AI-enabled tools responsibly and effectively.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related technical field. The role expects approximately 5+ years of relevant engineering experience.
